Qui fut le premier gothique ? Etait-ce Poe ? Baudelaire ? Wilde ?
Ou faut-il remonter plus loin encore, jusqu’aux premiers artistes exorcisant le mal-être du monde par des œuvres sombres et hantées ?

C’est en tout cas dans l’Angleterre de la seconde moitié des années 70, dans les brumes et la grisaille, dans la foulée et sur les décombres du Punk que se forment les premiers groupes que l’on considère aujourd’hui comme les pères et mères fondateurs du Rock Gothique. Exit la colère vaine de leurs prédécesseurs, la scène gothique se construit autour de ses clubs et de son esthétique, porteuse d’un romantisme noir aux saveurs funèbres.

En Europe, puis Outre-Atlantique, le virus gagne, les voix se font caverneuses, les basses omniprésentes et les rythmes mécaniques. On s’habille de noir, on danse la mort et les ténèbres.

Au cours des deux premières décennies d’existence du rock gothique, plusieurs vagues se sont succédées, redéfinissant toujours un peu plus les contours d’une musique qui n’en finit pas de fasciner.
Les trente artistes réunis ici vont nous servir de guides…
