"I am going to play devil's advocate here and say this and it is only my opinion.
Get yourself booked in bars/clubs that PAY for performances. These places usually use it as a free show. I work with a handful of venues and all of them pay me for my talents and my performers talents. Think of this way: You have a national that you hire. You pay him for the 45 mins average performance and also fly him out, lodge and feed him. Does not end there he still needs rides to and from venue and hotel. And renting a venue. You're in over 1500 and Now you have to make your performers pay to play. No way around it unless you drop the entire amount which I def have and made nothing. Now lets take a similar situation: I book a hot up and coming local from Denver/Springs and pay him 1/10 of what the national wanted. No hotel,no rides and no self entitlement that usually (not always) comes with a national. Now instead of keeping an older national relevant you are building a community and betting on locals. These locals will give you 100% because they are hungry. Also they will network and you just opened a new circle. In this case you will make money if you work with a venue that pays you. Just my 2 cents but these venues are out there and if you connect and make a killer show they cannot say no. Another way to help offset show costs is sponsorship. Get out there and get small businesses on your side. All about community right? " Just my 2 cents.
