Golden morning on a winters day 🌟 making the most of a calmer day with no wind and rain. Target species was the king George whiting. As the temps are low whiting become harder to find and smaller bite windows so we headed for shallow waters as it is warmer. Today’s tide was 2hrs late so we had to be patient to wait for it to run. Once the tide kicked in and we lined up along the sand holes, we were into some good whiting. I love bringing home fresh fish for the table and even better leaving them biting for next session 🙌🏼 whiting snatcher in green grub paired with fresh squid and pipis. Mussel shells for burley.

Did you know there are two distinct stocks of Australian salmon in Victorian waters?
The eastern and western stocks are thought to have come about as a result of Tasmania being connected to the mainland until about 12,000 years ago.
Eastern Aussie salmon grow to 81cm, mature at 2-4 years of age, and can live to 12.

Western Aussie salmon grow to 96cm, mature at 3-5 years, and can also live to 12.
These salmon spawn at the northern reaches of their natural ranges in WA and NSW with oceanic currents carrying their eggs south to nursery areas in Victoria, Tassie and South Oz.

Interestingly, several other marine species also have two stocks, likely for the same reason, including snapper, mako sharks, great whites, Port Jackson sharks and various rays.

Did you know that the largest and oldest aquaculture system in the world exists right here in south-west Victoria?

Budj Bim is a dormant volcano on Gunditjmara Country, located between Portland and Port Fairy. It’s home to an extensive collection of lakes, wetland swamps and sinkholes created by ancient lava flows, making it the ideal habitat for eels and other fish.

By creating stone channels and weirs within the landscape, the Gunditjmara People were able to manipulate seasonal flows to release or trap eels in holding ponds, catering for seasonal variation in supply while maintaining sustainability of the eel population. They were able to farm large quantities of short-finned eels within the ponds and channels, using woven nets and traps.

Further evidence of stone dwellings made from basaltic rock formations and many ‘smoking trees,’ where eels were smoked for consumption, are scattered throughout the area too. The cultural landscape is estimated to be at least 6,600 years old and was added to the World Heritage List in 2019 in recognition of its outstanding universal value.

To find out more about this fascinating place and to check it out for yourself, visit www.budjbim.com.au.

This weather has certainly been up and down lately and of course freezing here in Victoria but it doesn’t stop the southern calamari activity. A species you can catch land base of the rocks and jetty’s, kayak and boat. What is it do you love about squid? And is there something you can share with others that might help them catch their first squid that you have learned in your time fishing for them?
