When Naked Giants formed in 2014, the Seattle trio—vocalist/guitarist Grant Mullen, bassist/vocalist Gianni Aiello and drummer Henry LaVallee—were all eighteen years old, and full of the reckless, restless energy of youth. A decade on, both they and the world have changed immensely. Shine Away—the band’s third full-length, following on from 2018’s SLUFF and 2020’s The Shadow—is very much an acknowledgement of that. It’s an album that doesn’t just reflect on the personal life and times of the three of them and the world at large, but casts a discerning, self-reflective eye on what it’s like to be in, and be, Naked Giants. It’s the sound of a band coming into, and becoming, themselves. Of course, that’s a never-ending process, but for the first time in their career, Naked Giants are taking stock of their journey—who and what they were, are, and want to be.

20 Years... Tired Like Dirt

We’re a little proud to have survived in this music industry for 20 years now and please don’t take the compilation title "Tired Like Dirt“ too literally, even though there is some truth in it we stole it from a Gunner & Smith song.

DevilDuck Records is turning 20 years in 2024 and some might say this has to be celebrated in whatever way……which might be true. Even though we did a label compilation a while ago for our 15th anniversary what makes more sense than coming up with another one as it’s the artists who define the label and not the other way around, right? And that’s what "20 Years - Tired Like Dirt“ is delivering now with 13 artists and bands incl. only one cover and still a lot of newish stuff as we signed 6 (!) of these by last year.

We still do love Canadian artists (Marissa Burwell, Gunner and Smith, The Dead South) and some German ones are always obvious ( Scotch & Water, Palila, Would, Wisent, Merlin Hydes, Kommando Kant) but after quite some time we have started to work with a British band (Conscious Pilot) and some US Americans (The Macks, The Fourth Wall, Timesbold) again.

The running order came up a bit spontaneous which I always like because in the end it all makes sense…so kind of by accident all three bands & artists from Canada are from Saskatchewan and in a row here. Some new stuff is at the beginning of the album and for obvious reasons Timesbold had to close it.

What is the price we pay for joy, and is it worth it? The thread of this question runs taut through The Fourth Wall’s Return Forever, a fever dream of a record that unearths unresolved complexities of the immigrant experience in nine chapters. Throughout the album, songwriter Stephen Agustin circles a fire that feels so bright and yet so unknowable; there are not many answers to be found, only a disruption, the emergence of a world seen with new eyes.

Return Forever was first inspired by a moment in Agustin’s family history in which he learned that a close relative had left behind a young daughter when she moved to the United States, turning away from her past life and creating one anew. Shocked though he was, Agustin soon became fascinated with the idea of the “poetry of forgetfulness.”

“There was almost a way in which the impulse to revise or destroy history became a condition for achieving this joyous state.” He says. It was a theme he would begin to see over and over again: in the way he saw immigrant families assimilating into the United States, or in the way he saw his own parents and grandparents—who were from Korea and the Philippines—harbor so little resentment towards America despite the traumatic history of war and colonization it has with those countries. Lush, cinematic, and bold, The Fourth Wall paints the paradox of the exchange of joy for memory so perfectly. Driven by Agustin’s mastery of electric guitar soundscapes and the distorted, impassioned harmonies he shares with the band’s newest member Kendall Sallay, Return Forever is a journey that somehow captures the unfathomable. It is hair-raising, powerful, gorgeous.

Known and loved for its fine en elegant Americana, the band has been releasing music with his various bands and projects for over 20 years, most recently as Whip or with the Miracle Whips. For the first time since 2008, Timesbold released a new Timesbold album in 2023, whose folk and Americana has gone through at least as many iterations as the lineup. Nothing has changed in the protagonist’s great songwriting qualities, as “Not Still Here” impressively demonstrates.

Jason Merritt remains a strong storyteller and that can’t be said often enough. When he shows up, he shows up with style and emphasis. His words on “Not Still Here” carry weight and don’t just manage the Timesbold legacy, they evolve it. The opener may lead you down the wrong track, but at the same time is one of the most interesting new tracks. Behind it awaits familiar, no less gripping fare between Americana, country, folk and singer/songwriter, crowned by a fascinating voice and no less rousing lyrics.

We're so excited to share "Darkness of Heart", the newest single from The Fourth Wall. This is the second single from their upcoming album "Return Forever" coming out on March 15th.

About the song:

"During the time I was writing this record, I was processing all these fragments of my immigrant family’s history. In hearing a lot of personal stories about the conditions and motivating factors that led to their move to the states, I began researching some of the histories of war and colonialism (in Korea and the Philippines) that was always lurking in the background, though hardly discussed amongst family members across generations.

The initial idea of the song, “Darkness of Heart” was to reverse the roles and settings of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness so that the ‘otherized’ individual infiltrates the ‘civilized’ world instead (hence the reversal in the song title). Instead of the ‘becoming-savage’ of Kurtz in Heart of Darkness, a new type of becoming afflicts the protagonist of the song. At its core it’s a story about person who flees their country of origin in search of the American dream with hopes to forget all of the past traumas that precipitated the causes for their flight. However, though the assimilation process, tensions from the past resurface in the new world, despite attempts to erase them from memory. The narrator attempts to make the most out of their self-willed loss of identity while being trapped in a loveless relationship echos past deadlocks. The song wonders if the haunting pleasure of a new world coming into being and willful repression of the past is what sets the repetition compulsion in motion."
