Benedict Cocco
Benedict Cocco, the last heir of the Venetian Cocco family, was a man whose name was synonymous with murmured legends among the rich and poor of Venice. The wealth of the Cocco family had been gathered across numerous generations by means of trade routes and daring maritime ventures acquiring them the power to reign over Venice's mercantile realm. Yet, upon Benedict assumed control of the family realm, the ancient traditions and devotion to respect quickly yielded to selfishness and hunger for power.
Benedict was never content with what he inherited. His ambitions knew no boundaries; he ruthlessly used his wealth and influence to defeat his rivals, to silence dissenters, and to solidify his own power. His enforcers, often chosen from the shadows of the city, were dreaded implements of these ambitions. Dreadful tales circulated regarding those unable to repay their debts, shook even the bravest of hearts.
The culmination of Benedict's malevolence was manifested in the devastation of a young merchant family who was once companion of the Coccos. The family proposed an inventive merchant idea that could have revolutionized Venice's economy, yet Benedict perceived only a threat to his own power in it. Through his covert agents, he destroyed them, seized all their wealth, and the whole family was dispersed, with some of its members never seen again.
This deed did not escape retribution. An ancestor of the merchant kin, well-versed in the ancient mystic lore, cast a curse upon Benedict and his entire realm. As per the curse, whilst the Cocco family place their craving for power and wealth afore all else, they shall never find tranquillity, neither in this mortal existence nor in the realm beyond.
