Who's been there?

DEVIL'S TRAMPING GROUND: 🌿👻 Tucked away in the spooky woods of Chatham County, this eerie 40-foot barren circle has baffled folks for centuries! Legend says the Devil himself paces here at night, plotting his next mischief—that's why NOTHING grows inside, and objects left overnight vanish like magic. 🪄 Dogs refuse to enter, campers hear footsteps, and the silence is deafening!

Diving into the history: Roots trace back to pre-1700s indigenous tribes (like the Siouan Eno or Occaneechi) who may have used it as a sacred dance ground or burial site for a chief named Croatan—kept bare by rituals. European settlers in the 1700s-1800s shifted the legend to match their own faith-based lore, attributing the unexplained to the Devil. In the mid-1800s, tales of "Satan's tramping" spread among farmers who avoided plowing it. Early reports in 1880s papers like the Chatham Record described strange experiences and even a giant shadow beast lurking in the woods.

Scientific scrutiny kicked in during the 1920s-1940s: UNC botanists found salty soil killing growth (seeds failed to sprout!), blaming brine deposits or compaction. But the real boom came in 1949 with journalist John Harden's book The Devil's Tramping Ground and Other North Carolina Mystery Stories, packed with eyewitness accounts that made it a national sensation. By the 1950s-90s, paranormal hunts surged, it joined NC Scenic Byways in 1991, and USDA tests pointed to microbes/erosion.

Stranger than any legends or folklore is just this: For more than 400 years, nothing has grown here... and we still don't know why.
