The recent USMNT vs Mexico was awesome to watch. I live in Denver, but, for me, family comes first. I was on my way back from a family reunion the day of the game. I wish I had made it more of a priority to be there!
I watched the game a few times. Here are 10 thoughts on the game.
1. There may have been several dumb errors by the US, but I’ve seen the US play a lot less inspired. I love to see the fight in the players, the intensity.
2. Can’t there be more done about the Mexican fans throwing things! We have cameras. Watch the footage and dish out some type of punishment. Make people think twice in the future.
3. I think it is clear that the players like Gregg Berhalter. I think the players see how much he works and cares about how well there team plays. I think they’re following his lead. No coach is perfect, but I feel like we could do a lot worse than Gregg.
4. Can’t there be a retroactive punishment given for another hand to the throat of Weston Mckennie?!
5. I am surprised that the Mexican players were surprised by the American players response to a Mexican player kicking the American goalie. The Mexican players would have reacted the same way had an American player done that, if not more strongly.
6. I think Acosta got better as the game went on. He is a local player, so one would guess that would help him.
7. I think Pulisic as a number 10, central facilitator is worth trying a few times. He needs to be more involved.
8. Dest was defended very well by Mexico. Hopefully, he can figure things out for the future. It goes to show that just because he plays for Barca he can’t come into these games and dominate. He did make a beautiful run down the sideline.
9. Hopefully, Ethan Horvath can use the publicity from this game to get into a good club situation!
10. I assume Sargent is starting for his work rate, and the way he changes the shape of the defense with his runs. Otherwise, we should try some other players out more often.
