There are many legends about the origin of the Pekingese. They say, they were made by Buddhist monks. Some say, in the imperial palace under the orders of Empress Dowager Cixi. Another legend is that a lion fell in love with a marmoset. Their sizes made it impossible for them to be together. The lion asked the gods to shrink him so he can be with the love of his life. A god granted his wish but kept his heart big. Hence, the pekingese was born.
