My anti-aging secret: keep doing more things for the first time, not the last time.

Last night I engineered and broadcast a live poetry fest from our local hall on our FM station KAVZ 102.5 which I'm the new station manager at.

We had a great time putting on my FM voice and doing the engineering. Sounded great and folks could hear this year because of the PA built into the hall that I designed and installed. Feeling good.

iChange Justice airs on Friday at 10: Season 2 of iChange Justice Podcast begins with "The Money Business" as experienced from inside prison walls. Our listeners hear firsthand how jail industry contractors and DOC officials do business. This interview is directly from an inmate discussing how things have changed the past few years for people incarcerated (especially since 2007) in Washington State.

It has become very difficult to talk about and to advocate for justice once you are inside. Due to various legislative issues, minimum wage inmate jobs have been lost, and the only work is janitorial or maintenance. Inmates are paid 60 cents an hour, and there is a $55-a-month income cap.

At the same time, the costs of telephone calls, mailing letters and sending and receiving emails have risen. For example, just one 15-minute conversation with a family member in another state cost him $25.00.

The old story of people being able to be rehabilitated and being able to leave prison with some earned money saved is now mostly a fairytale.

From the concerned citizens at the Center for Responsible Forestry:
"We invite you to join the Center for Responsible Forestry for a forest outing to one of Whatcom County's few remaining unprotected mature legacy forests on state-managed lands. We will be visiting "Box of Rain" timber sale, a beautiful naturally-regenerated forest in the Middle Fork Nooksack River watershed. This forest is 82-109 years old and has biodiversity that includes mature trees around 4 ft. in diameter. Box of Rain is slated to be auctioned off for clearcut logging by the Department of Natural Resources on November 1st unless the community takes steps to protect it!

On the outing we will learn about what makes legacy forests so important by looking at the forest's features and comparing it to surrounding plantation forests. We will also learn about how mature forests are important for watershed health as we face increasing challenges from climate change. There are already significant signs of nearby erosion into Clearwater Creek and the Middle Fork, and we will discuss how legacy forests play an important role in combating further erosion. We will also talk about efforts in Whatcom County and WA State to protect the last remaining unprotected legacy state forests that are disappearing every month. Participants will learn some basics about how to field check a forest and identify native plants and fungi we find, which are essential skills for protecting forests at risk of getting clearcut.

After our forest walk there will be the option to enjoy spending time by Clearwater Creek, a spot that is beloved by the community and is once again salmon spawning habitat due to the recent Middle Fork Nooksack dam removal downstream!

Outing details:

When: Sunday 10/16/22 10:30am-2:30pm

Where: The forest is a couple of miles up a logging road off Mosquito Lake Rd. When you register you will receive detailed directions

Parking is limited at the forest, so we recommend that you drive with other friends who are also going. Depending on how many people register, we may organize carpooling logistics. Only 14 cars will be able to park at the site, so the outing is limited to 60 people. There are no maintained trails in the forest, so be prepared for some steep terrain and stepping over downed logs. We won't be walking for more than 1 mile.

What to bring: your own snacks, water, comfortable hiking shoes, a walking stick, a pen/pencil and something to write on, and a camera (optional).

Registration is required. Please register HERE. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeCOiQiyrdNyy5s4tO8v5tSjP9oEUnw6cFuuWgovMtX05wk2Q/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1&flr=0

We are looking forward to enjoying this beautiful forest with you!
