Halloween began here in Ireland with Samhain, the ancient festival marking the end of harvest and the start of winter—a night when the line between this world & the spirit world grew thin. Here are some traditions that bring a little Samhain spirit to your night: 🔥 Bonfires & Divination
Communities once gathered around bonfires for protection and to boost fortune. The fire was also used for scrying, where people would read shapes in the flames or throw items into the fire to glimpse the future. Try lighting a candle or small fire this year & focus on a question for the year ahead. 👻 Costumes
Our costumes come from “guising,” when people dressed up in animal skins or straw to confuse wandering spirits. Guising evolved into early trick-or-treating. Even if you’re just answering the door to kids tonight, wear a mask to keep the spirits guessing. 🍏 Harvest Games & Marriage Divination
With Samhain marking the last harvest, people played games like apple bobbing & nut roasting to predict love and marriage. Try the old tradition: place two nuts in the fire, one for you & one for a love interest. If they burn side-by-side, it’s a good match; if they pop apart, it’s likely not “meant to be.” 🍎 Offerings for Spirits & the Dead
