"Second Coming" and "Ballad of Dwight Fry", two songs that roll into each other, are from the album Love It to Death, which paved the way to commercial success and led to the subsequent albums, Killer, School's Out, and Billion Dollar Babies. The songs represent a time period in Alice Cooper's performance life of an up and coming band who were destined to go to the top. Due to their total length in time, the combined songs almost never received any radio airplay. That is, until my show came along. Besides Alice, the video also features glimpses of the highly talented members of the original band, Glen Buxton, Dennis Dunaway, Michael Bruce, and, although not seen, the solid beat of drummer Neal Smith. Canadian rock band Crash Test Dummies covered "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" which was originally performed by XTC, and written by their singer, Andy Partridge. I have previously posted the XTC version, with accompanying video that explicitly references the assassination of John F. Kennedy. For the Crash Test Dummies video, a more Halloween-related approach was taken. The video features Jeff Daniels reprising his role from the movie "Dumb and Dumber", while getting a jack-o'-lantern stuck on his head, also thwarting a bank robbery, though later wrongfully found guilty of it, almost being executed by hanging, and then celebrated as a martyr by members of the Church of the Latter-Day Pumpkinheads. The Crash Test Dummies version of the song is featured on the album, Dumb and Dumber: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Happy Halloween Eve!

Canadian new wave band Men Without Hats, known for their heavy use of synthesizers and electronic processing have so far produced 7 albums. Their first, Rhythm of Youth, has been certified Gold and twice Platinum, mainly due to the enormous success of the album's 2nd promo single, "Safety Dance". The song reached number one on the Cash Box and Billboard charts. It also remained on the Billboard Hot 100 for 24 weeks.

With a band that's been around since 1978, Social Distortion. When i interviewed singer, writer Mike Ness, he told me "I was one of those guys who wanted to be a rock star since I was 5 years old, but I never thought i would be rocking in a band for 40 years." This song, "When the Angels Sing", which Ness added, "was to honor his grandmother", is from the band's 5th album, White Light, White Heat, White Trash.

A band out of Iceland. They are called Of Monsters and Men, and are classified as indie folk rock. The band has been the recipient of numerous awards, and their debut album reached the number one position on the US Rock and Alternative Charts. The song, "Alligator" is the first track on their latest album, released on July 26th, 2019, and called Fever Dream.

The first time I did an on-air interview with Abra Moore, she started showing me some photos of her as a child growing up in Hawaii. I told her that was great, but that it just didn't work too well in radio. She agreed. I think she may have momentarily forgotten about the listeners. "Four Leaf Clover" is the highest-charting song from her 2nd album Strangest Places.

Since I come from a railroad background, I was anxious to ask R.E.M. singer, writer Michael Stipe about the origin of "Driver 8", and as it turns out, he's a railfan. He wrote the song about the "Crescent", the top passenger train that ran on the former Southern Railway, which is now part of the larger Norfolk Southern Railway, which also happens to be the railroad I was employed by. The accompanying video features trains from the Chessie System operating in Clifton Forge, Virginia. A town I have visited. Small world. The song has been covered by 8 different bands, some with railroad-related names, and is from R.E.M.'s third album, Fables of the Reconstruction.

I have played this song on my show and didn't think much about it at first, but once again , how wrong John Katz can be... that is until I met Jayhawks' composer/lead vocalist Gary Louris, who explained that this was the song that "put them on the map" in his words. "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" is from their 6th album called Smile.

A well- known composition by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, "Mother's Little Helper", released as track number one on the Rolling Stones' album, Aftermath. Although I've played it often during my show, I became aware that there was no official video associated with the song. However, during an interview with Keith Richards, he explained that "there really wasn't a video per se, but only a short clip from a proposed documentary."

A song I often used as a time filler to bring the show up to the top of the hour at the Classical Music station which was my first radio job. It was composed by James Swearingen as the opening theme for the 1957 movie "The Story of a Patriot", still shown today at the Williamsburg, Virginia Visitor Center. I guess it was a natural selection for a harried DJ (me) who was back-timing songs and trying to bring programming to the start of Mutual News.

"Wild Child", a song I have been able to utilize as a show opener many times. In fact, so often that listeners asked to hear it in it's entirety. Of course, being an obedient servant of the masses, I complied. Using this song to open my show creates a contrast to the metal and hard rock featured in my playlist. Anyway, some background is required in this short narrative, as I have had the pleasure of meeting New Age Irish singer, writer Enya Brennan who was kind enough to grant an interview. This song was released as the final promo single for her fifth album, A Day Without Rain, which became the best-selling New Age album of all time. Enya told me that she wrote the song "as a paean to the stage in her life where she made a positive decision to continue composing music."

People have asked if I have a softer side, and in a rare moment of honesty, I have to say no. I'm just a hard-nosed jerk who graduated from the school of hard knox and dirty sox. That's the reason the only job I could ever succeed in is radio. However, I can present a softer side of music as exemplified by German musical group Enigma. This is "Soft Rock Star" from Canadian band, Metric. The song is from their third album, Grow Up and Blow Away. When I met singer Emily Haines for an interview, she revealed that although "Grow Up and Blow Away" was released as their third album, it was originally supposed to be their first, but was shelved and followed the albums, "Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?" and "Live It Out". During the interview, I did venture an opinion "that any band she fronted would serve as the window dressing for her vocal display of octave range". An indie band named after an amateur produced film, Vampire Weekend. The song, "Oxford Comma", is named for the use of a comma before "and" in a series of three terms and is from their first album, self-titled, Vampire Weekend. During an interview with alternative rock band R.E.M. lead singer, song composer Michael Stipe, I mentioned what a believable job he pulled off as a TV news anchor for the "Bad Day" related video. In a typical Stipe display of humility, he thanked me, but said that it was anger that motivated his performance as well as the impetus for the song itself, as one day when he answered the front door he was met with an impromptu TV camera crew seeking an interview. Although Stipe first penned the song in 1985, it was not included on an album until the 2003 release of In Time.

I first heard this song, "End of Our Days", when it was used as the music bed for the ending credits of "The Bridge". A documentary that spanned a filmed year of suicides from the Golden Gate Bridge. I started playing the song on my show, garnering positive listener feedback. As luck would have it and mainly due to the efforts of my talented producer, I was later able to interview the song's writer and performer, Howie Day, who expressed his gratitude for the additional airplay the documentary had created although he indicated sadness concerning the subject matter of the film. The City Winery, in New York City, on July 14, 2022, will be the location for Day's next concert performance with tickets on sale now from stubhub.com.

Foo Fighters lead vocalist, guitarist, writer David Grohl operates a studio at his home in Alexandria, Virginia, and I interviewed him there. He explained that the band was experiencing a lot of personal turmoil and conflicts during the production of their 4th album, One by One. While writing the lyrics for one of the tracks found on the album, "Times Like These", Grohl expressed his feelings about those conflicts. British rock band, The Hollies, kick off their 2022 world tour starting April 2nd in Morristown, New Jersey, which is already a sold-out show. German rock band Scorpions are currently on tour in the US with their next show in Las Vegas. Tickets and times are available from vividseats.com. Of course their music lineup will include the mega-hit "Winds of Change", which was written to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall. It's one of the best-selling singles of all time, originally released as a promo for the 1990 album, Crazy World. During an interview I had with lead vocalist/ writer Klaus Meine it was confirmed that he performed the whistling at the beginning and ending of the song, versus a hired "Whistling Artist."

Sometimes at parties I'm asked to name a band where the lead vocalist is a drummer and The Romantics always come to mind. With all of the notoriety and controversy generated by Courtney Love, about all I can add is that her band, Hole, became one of the most successful rock bands of all time that was fronted by a woman. From their third album, Celebrity Skin, this is "Malibu". As a side note, this is the second music video I have posted that featured burning palm trees, the first being "Swim" by Surfer Blood.

When David Gilmour joined progressive rock band Pink Floyd as guitarist and co-lead vocalist, he became one of the driving forces behind four concept albums that helped propel the group to international recognition and increased record sales to over 250 million worldwide. He wrote the power ballad "On the Turning Away" along with Anthony Moore, and included it on the thirteenth album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason. Canadian musician Bryan Adams, winner of numerous artistic awards, in both music and photography, producer of platinum certified albums, in-demand collaborator with other performers, and proud composer/performer of three number one songs in a row, recorded "Christmas Time" over 30 years ago, without an accompanying video. As British rock band Jethro Tull vocalist/composer and multi-instrumentalist Ian Anderson searched for a song to further his flute-playing skills, the inspiration came to him from a neighbor who played the Johann Sebastian Bach 18th Century song, "Bouree" over and over on guitar while attempting to learn it. Anderson then arranged the tune for his band based upon the strong foundation of bassist Glenn Cornick and included the instrumental in their concert lineup as well as their 2nd album, Stand Up.

From a German band that was formed in 1970 in Dusseldorf, and whose members are considered as pioneers and innovators of electronic music, Kraftwerk. This song, "Autobahn", was released in November 1974 as a promo single for their album of the same name and which became the group's breakthrough hit receiving regular airplay on mainstream radio which lead to an international tour.
