Little foraging finch in the flower patch! This year we have an abundance of goldfinch in our yard, but are also seeing many house finch and even a few purple finch! I've planted a large bed of New England aster which they go wild for in the fall. We've put 3 birdbaths in various locations in the yard which they visit regularly. The finches add such a cheery vibe both in sight and sound to our yard!

To continue with the pollinator-friendly theme of this summer in Orillia, Matt Thomson and lots of friends and helpers are planting pollinator-friendly gardens at the Port of Orillia.
These will be all native species friendly to our native bees in Canada.

Big thanks to Parklane Landscaping, the Orillia Lions Club, the Orillia Chamber and lots of fantastic volunteers for making this possible!

Submitted: Get ready for an exhilarating day of adventure and charity at the Everest Challenge on Sunday, October 6th, 2024. This unique event, taking place at the picturesque Horseshoe Resort in Horseshoe Valley, will see teams of climbers conquering the combined height of Mount Everest. Funds raised will support United Way Simcoe Muskoka and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, the largest trauma center in Canada.

Teams of 2 to 10+ members will embark on a collective mission to climb Horseshoe Resort Mountain multiple times, reaching a cumulative height of 29,092 feet – equivalent to the height of Mount Everest. A team of four will make 24 ascents, a team of six will make 16 ascents, and a team of twelve will make 8 ascents. Participants can choose from four different routes to the summit, each offering unique views of Ontario’s breathtaking autumn colours. Outside North Simcoe: Check out the Nancy Island Historic Site in Wasaga Beach! While just a stone's throw away, this site is a fun place to explore with the kids to learn about history and the HMS Nancy. The Island actually began to grow over the remains of the wreckage and was later excavated to develop the museum which is under the care of the Wasaga Beach Provincial Park. Borrow a Park Pass from a local library this summer and you go for free!

This coming Sunday, July 14th!

Sunday, July 14th at 6:30 pm we will be playing our final concert of the summer at the Rotary Aqua Theatre at Couchiching Beach Park in Orillia!

The band will delight you with something for everyone. You'll get to tap your feet to Eric Osterling's fun march Bandology and listen to the Music of Hollywood with Goff Richards' original work called Hollywood! and well as The Old Gumbie Cat from the musical Cats! Two of our soloists will play for you - Rita Arendz will play Phil Harper's The Beauty Within on tenor horn and Debbie Silverthorne will reprise her version of Chuck Mangione's Children of Sanchez on Flugelhorn. And for those who like the classics you will hear The Battle Suite, and music of the Renaissance written my Samuel Scheidt.

A summer concert wouldn't be complete without a little taste of swing so we will also play Ty Watson's new piece Together Again that was commissioned by our bass trombonist, Howard Lee, in memory of his parents and maybe even a little Opus One and Caravan in case anyone wants to dance!

You won't want to miss this fun concert in the park!
