[Technology Corner] USDA Use of Ag Data Raises Data Privacy Concerns Among Farmers
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, other U.S. government agencies and private companies use ag data to measure the impact of initiatives aimed at sequestering carbon. In 2022, the USDA announced a $3.1 billion program aimed at funding climate-smart commodity projects through collecting data, but a recent survey found that 58% of farmers do not trust government offices with their data. Agricultural attorney Todd Janzen says that the USDA cannot disclose specific information provided by producers or owners of agricultural land.

[Technology Corner] Check All Boxes Before Hosting Drone Clinics
A large drone dealer in Florida can no longer fly drones over 55 pounds after allegedly violating multiple Federal Aviation Administration regulations. Here’s what reportedly happened — FAA officials showed up at a training session hosted by the dealer and learned the pilot in command allegedly didn’t have registration for the drone, and he was flying it too close to a non-participating farmer. For some perspective, we reached out to Adam Gittins, president of Harlan, Iowa-based drone dealer HTS Ag. Gittins says this case serves as a harsh reminder for dealers to make sure all their boxes are checked before operating drones.

Sentera Launches Precision Weed Management Solution
Precision ag startup Sentera launched an Early Access Program to preview its Aerial WeedScout product. The company says the program will provide valuable feedback and build momentum for the 2025 commercial release of Aerial WeedScout.
Select input companies, equipment providers, retailers and farmers will be able to test the product through the program.
Aerial WeedScout is a selective herbicide application service that aims to lower the total use of herbicides for farmers by up to 70%. It uses aerial imaging from a drone and artificial intelligence to detect weeds and ultimately create prescriptions within 24 hours that can be executed through any precision sprayer.
