HELP SUPPORT A YOUNG BLAK ENTREPRENEUR

Hi everyone- my daughter Alyce (15), started a bead jewellery making business over 12 months ago and in the February 2022 floods we lost a majority of her stock. Her business is called Alyce T designs on FB she’s an inspiring young Indigenous entrepreneur but since the floods she has temporarily closed so that we can restock. Unfortunately it’s been a longer process than we would have liked to help her restart and so we are asking for your assistance.

She’s hard working and motivated and deserves a hand to help her restart if you can help a little or a lot we truly appreciate it. Louise & Alyce Togo.

Don't forget NAIDOC is just around the corner. A great time to stock up & support a young Blak business.

WINYARR COLLECTION OUT NOW! Designed by Alkina Edwards 🖤❤️💛

Through our partnership with Culture is Life we have had the unique opportunity to collaborate with a young First Nations artist, Alkina Edwards, whose art is inspired by the stories passed down from her family, community and Country. Alkina has proud matriarchal connections to Yorta Yorta, Wemba Wemba, Mutthi Mutthi and Wiradjuri tribes. Alkina draws on the history and experiences of her people to create artwork that represents female empowerment and strength.

Winyarr means ‘Aboriginal woman/women’ in Yorta Yorta Language. The artwork in the Winyarr Collection depicts a group of women along the sacred Dungala (Murray River), linking arms to represent the Aborginal women that have been here for thousands of years.

First Nations Models : Madi Walker, Tasie Lovett Walker, Medika Bonney.

I’m super proud to be an Ambassador for NITV’s Reimagine Australia campaign. Hopefully, we’ve planted the seeds.

The campaign asks audiences to rethink our identity as a nation and work towards a future fuelled by the vibrancy of cultures in Australia, underpinned by 60-thousand years of traditional, resilience and strength of First Nations people.

REPOST 😍 Yarrabah Wearable Arts Project (YWAP) is a collaboration with the Yarrabah Art Centre , Djunngaal Elders and Francoise Lane of Indj Design. This unique collection was showcased via CIAF’s digital Fashion Performance - Of Spirit & Story: Sacred Sites & Places of Significance.
‘Flora & Fauna Nomore’ is in response to the CIAF theme of ‘SACRED’. The story of seclusion, experienced firsthand, provided a powerful narrative about the 1967 Referendum specifically the 27th of May when Australians overwhelmingly voted YES to amend the Constitution AND allow the Commonwealth to make laws for Aboriginal people and include them in the census. The collection is phase 2, and comes off the back of the CIAF 2019 collection around the ‘Punishment Dress’.
‘Flora & Fauna Nomore’ started off the right way with a blessing on Country around a fire. We then used charcoal from the fire to draw our designs. In reference to the 1967 Referendum, Artists and Elders and family conducted research in the Menmuny Museum of dresses worn around that period.

Check out the collection online 🖤💛❤️💙💚

😍“I adore this book” just as much as Tony Birch does.

‘Satirical, sensitive and subversive, Jazz Money is a poet to watch.’ Omar Sakr.

Indeed she is! Jazz Money blew me away when I caught her spoken word performance If Write A Poem on NITV earlier this year. Her delicate words weave a basket – not only for her but for us.

How To Make A Basket is Money’s first book – a collection of poems that compels you to surrender. Be present and feel the suppressed emotions; perhaps you were too scared, too weak to acknowledge. Jazz is kind, raw and generous – when she offers her basket for you to carry what you’ve unearthed so it can sit safely above the surface.

I caught myself re-reading – retracing each line to find where I began and where I was going. Jazz’s poetry reminds me love still exists even if my heart is fragmented. She traverses the political landmines (living Blak) and reclaims language so that we know the taste of revival when it is spoken.

How To Make A Basket is a series of love letters, a declaration, you are – we are, still here.

You can purchase How To Make A Basket from UQP 📚 Cover Art .mlee 🖤💛❤️

This month I finished Larissa Behrendts' After Story – the perfect remedy when optimism during lockdown begins to wane.

After Story is a gem, you can't put down, reaching the last chapter, I got literary anxiety akin to binging a rare find on Netflix. Goodbye so soon?

Larissa wonderfully crafts classic English literature and Aboriginal storytelling through a fragile mother and daughter relationship. Behrendt introduces us to Indigenous lawyer Jasmine who invites her mother Della on a literary tour to mend their past.

But even abroad, old wounds are opened when a young child goes missing – a tragedy they know all too well, which is why you're left rooting for Della and Jasmine to find their way to forgiveness. Jazz's childhood escapism via books reminded me of the solace it brought me. And when I fell in love with Lewis Carroll’s Alice's Adventure in Wonderland as a girl. The most endearing parts are Aunty Elaine's stories – the wisdom carried with you no matter where you go.

After Story inspired me to keep speaking with my Elders to capture Our Stories and a yearning to ring mum for that yarn, I didn't know I needed.

You can purchase After Story from 📖🖤💛❤️
