The twenty first instalment of the Reference Mark Mix Series. Past, present and future friends of the label are given the chance to reference the sounds that define them.

It’s been almost a year since the last mix in the series, but we're reviving it with something truly special from Sunden. A long-time friend, Sunden has recently found form as a solo artist/DJ and part of the Umbilical Chords Collective with a slew of tracks and upcoming gigs. Here he demonstrates an impressive duality of sound: smooth subinfused breaks blending seamlessly with punchy, glitchy jungle techno. It's a bold and unmistakable statement from beginning to end, leaving us curious as to what Sunden's got up his sleeve for the next chapter.

For our next instalment, we invite Sheffield-based Chapel walk (aka Ah Dum) who provides us with an hour of deep techy house, electro-tinged breakbeat and shuffley garage. Chapel Walk runs the newly formed and exciting club night As Is, which has already hosted the likes of T Dunn, Sugar Free and KRN; the next show sees Leeds legends Bobby. and Mariiin take the reins. As a producer, he has been steadily honing his craft over the years and has recently made his debut two tracker release, CW001, available on bandcamp. The sound of As Is and Chapel Walk is distinct and consistent; a sound that is certain to get those wrists wafting.

We turn the dial up to 150 bpm for the next mix in the series. After providing the latest Reference Mark Recordings release (a thrillingly apocalyptic two tracker), Mußh returns to provide an hour of high energy ghetto house, pacey pop edits and brutal breaks. His signature sound is present throughout, with a number of his own tracks included in the mix. Precision blends, expert track selection but always having fun with it, strap yourself in and let Mußh blast you out to space.

Yet another Leeds connection - Rianna - No H is next up on the mix series. Having only started mixing in January 2021, No H has quickly developed her own unique style of mixing and selection. Having her own bi-monthly show on Alto Radio has helped with this, enabling her to play fresh dubs from friends and spin rare Bandcamp finds. In these shows you’ll hear a blend of afro bass, downtempo trap/drill and UK garage. No H pulls from these influences to put together an excellently crafted hour-long mix; moving through funky house, UK garage and bass and ending up at fast paced electro and hardcore. We can’t wait to hear what else No H has for us in the coming years…

Next up on the mix series is Stoffy. We’ve known Stoffy for years now (first meeting at college back in 2011!), but only recently appreciated his love for electronic music. A founding member of the London and Bristol based collective , Stoffy helped bring one of the first Lambda Labs sound systems to the UK, putting on intimate club nights and even a yearly festival over the past few years. An avid vinyl collector, Stoffy has developed a raw and unique sound DJing dance music; blending deep house cuts with percussive techy tracks and breakbeat influenced acid. This 100% vinyl mix perfectly reflects Stoffy’s dedication to the music he loves and his flourishing as a selector.

For RMM016 we invite a long time Leeds based friend, Junior Simba. As with a lot the friends of RM in the Leeds scene, we met Simba at an open decks. His enthusiasm for underground electronic music was (and still is) magnetic and infectious. Whenever he’s behind the decks – whether that be in a club, a house party or in the studio, his uplifting energy can always be felt through the music he plays and makes. Drawing from a wide range of influences, including his Zimbabwean heritage, Junior Simba puts together a mix that showcases the deeper sounds of house, with sprinklings of shuffling percussion and catchy vocal phrases.
