Halle Weissensee (or Weißensee if you wish) starts where Sascha Funke’s last Ep for Running Back stopped. Mesmerizing house and techno music that interweaves classic forms with modern means and looks through the lenses of nostalgia with an open mind.

The Halle was a former engine plant in Berlin that got converted into a rave areal for the now legendary Mayday raves and one of the birthplaces and leading spots of the nineties. Coincidentally and unknowingly, 1993’s winter edition was attended by Funke and Gerd Janson and a conversation about it spawned this record. Don’t be mislead: this is not a retro rave fest, but an ode to the esprit of the times, the possibilities if an envisioned future and maybe most of all an afterglow. While Reality (sounding like a Relief record if the label would have been a topic at Bauhaus university) and the warped bleepiness of Halle Weissensee itself come closest to the actual sound aesthetic of that very night, Fantasy invokes the language of contemplative deep house from vintage New York, while Puzzle evokes a notion of what the same thing could be with the prefix progressive instead. Reality often falls short behind fantasy, but once in a while both complement each other very well.

A master class in heartfelt and understated timeless deep house

Re-Dial 303.

Our first release of 2024 and the follow-up to the first Acid Sampler is now in the hands of a single artist. Space Dimension Controller does Running Back the honor to leave his fingerprints on the (usually) silver box - and it’s a match made in heaven. The Irish man’s music is mostly a nod to the subtle and more delicate ramifications of electronic music. His Acid Sampler is no exception. Most of the EP presents itself as an ode to the brain dance vibe of acid house rooted music. While leaving out the harder and faster styles of the genre, SDC manages to pour his heart and soul as a producer into these four charming tracks.

Kosmische Conga works as the leader of the pack and pirouettes with memorable hooks, synthesizer swells and descant acid lines. Echopet introverts the whole concept, while Minehead peaks with it. Named after the seaside town that harbored the Bloc Weekend festival, its a warp-free romantic reflex of the brain dance vibe – or a heartfelt love song for circuits. Carinacid completes the quartet with a chugging and hugging mid tempo beat that could have gone on forever. Acid test passed! Artwork by Gasius.

The single Kosmische Conga is out today and the EP/Vinyl to follow on February 2nd. Preorder a copy of the vinyl / presave link in bio.

Fango’s debut EP for Running Back draws a map of the Italian’s wonderful world of sounds: techno punk, ebm house and outsider disco.Inspired by and pptly named after four different dinosaurs, it consists of the irresistible uplifting vibe that is Sarcosuco and its sweet and melancholic counterpart Diplodoco, while the slow-motion rave Dimetrodonte and Gastonia mirror Fango’s darker and tool-like character. All in all, it’s like watching a dinosaur mosh pit from space. Special artwork by Luca Zamoc.

The single Sarcosuco is out today and the EP to follow on November 24th

Italo-Disco incoming. Originally released by Roy on Memory Records in 1987, Shooting Star (Six Times) is one of the holy grails of the genre. Here, the production abilities of David Jackson and Cormac‘s DJ sensibilities and vocals turn out a highly entertaining, retrofuturistic, compelling and punchy version in its own right. Tailor-made for Running Back, discerning dancefloors and modern lovers alike.

The next issue in the on-going Mastermix series features a centerpiece of Frankfurt’s club history: Wild Pitch Club.

A predecessor to the esteemed Robert Johnson and a stepping stone for Panorama Bar’s very own nd_baumecker.

Founded by Playhouse masterminds Ata and the late Heiko M/S/O it was a Thursday club night that heavily featured house music as a prescription to the ongoing techno fever. Enamored with the US-American roots of it and all things deep, it not only presented the right records, but also their creators and protagonists. With a string of guest DJs from Robert Hood and Claude Young to Kerri Chandler and Theo Parrish as well as talent from the UK and Europe, it was one of the culture’s hubs at the time.

Here you have its testimony. Selected and mixed by Ata and nd_baumecker, it’s an authentic snapshot of the club’s vibe and spirit, spread over two 2x12” volumes, a collectable tape (download included) and a pleasant streaming version, it’s the full dosage. Like Roach Motel confessed: Wild Pitch, I love you.

Part 5 of the various artists series is at it again with 5 tracks by 5 different producers and a mixture of feel good party time music and contemplative music. You will hear familiar Running Back names like Storken (this time together with JStaaf) refining their comic tropes (or imagine Foreigner doing house music) next to newcomers like Archie Ward. His Pizza Girl puts musical toppings on a pounding underbelly that wouldn’t be out of place in any warehouse, while Moritz and Amount dial it back a bit. Their respective tracks are gleaming with a special kind of elegant end-of-night euphoria that is hard to come by – and all the nicer if it happens. Remember: trance is a state of mind! Last but not least, Australia’s Jonus Eric delivers an IDM-leaning piece of outsider dance. Hot soup, hot swallow!

In certain circles this is a record that would easily be called „eternal“. Back in 1996 when it was originally released it sounded like nothing else - and still does. The sixth record of Frankfurt’s soon to be imperial Playhouse label and Losoul’s first outing on the label it hot-wired many things at once: house and techno US roots and European fruits grittiness and wittiness high tech funk the expansion pf playtimes and the concept of minimalism in dance music. Elegance met effectiveness.

A composition that hooked you and also caused a stir elsewhere. Daniel Bell licensed it to his Elevate label and commissioned a very young Theo Parrish to remix it Michel De Hey did the same with his EC Records and treatments by Gerd among others.

Here you finally get both of those carefully restored remastered and reissued next to the originals. Amply placed on a double 12“ it also features the previously unreleased D1. Stemming from the same time and era as Open Door it rings and feels like a compact lost brother. Addictive as on the very first day and here to stay.

Available for presale now and released on October 28th 2022

Welcome to Anthony Naples first outing for Running Back. Swerve sees the New York resident putting his dancing shoes back on and taking a pause from his admittedly brilliant other side. A development that last year’s Club Pez on ANS already foreshadowed. While his music is at times ethereal and cerebral, but also engaging and compelling, Naples manages to fill the gap between finesse and function with idiosyncratic abilities.

Starting with the title track that builds a bridge between a beehive and Joey Beltram’s hoover sound, it’s clear that Naples has something unique in case of temperature and tempo. Swerve flows around an addictive bass line, adds a splash of piano and manages to feel big without the usual cheap tricks. Played by Four Tet and Pete Tong. If bangers-not-bangers would be a genre, Naples would have created one of its prime examples. Swerve is out today and the EP release July 22nd - hit the link in bio to preorder.

03/05/2022

In the constant state of flux that house and techno are in since their inception, Berlin’s Sascha Funke is at once a fixture and an emblem of the city’s transformations. Probably best-known for his work on BPitch, Kompakt or the evergreen MZ, Funke’s EP for Running Back is an amalgamation of sounds, influences and atmospheres. Subdued rave euphoria, robotic disco-influenced techno-pop and hints of Berlin’s long gone „Dubmission“ party ethics get re-arranged, extracted and reconfigured with „German engineering“ values.

Take the ritual QAM for instance. Using a sample and the legendary morse melody of the weather forecast at the end of each „Tagesschau“ and putting it in a completely different context, is a prime example of a free-form approach to making music and making nostalgia future-proof. That also holds true for the rest of the EP. While titles like FEZ (Freizeit- und Erholungszentrum) or SEZ (Sport- und Erholungszentrum) refer to lost places in East Berlin, the tracks are anything but. Yearning, precisely programmed and full of joie de vivre at the same time, they all lock into and complement each other. So much, that you will find a new favorite with every listen.

Reunion time again. Running Back regular Redshape returns with Release Me. Four tracks and four deeper shades of Techno (or House?). It’s not a secret that the music of the man with the red mask is heavily influenced, inspired and informed by the blueprints and the symbolic language from the twin cities Detroit and Chicago.

The A-side is in debt of the latter. Delivered in two mixes, Release Me builds bridges between the frenzy side of acid house (Base Mix) and the more contemplative and restrained part of it (Windy Mix) – or where Saber meets State Street Records - haunting vocal phrases on top. Forward to Bonuz Me (the name gives it away) as a reminder of his popularity with the DJ guild and a piece of slam-dance. Finally, Second Ten bows to the Mo-Town and its techno soul with precise engineering from Redshape– strings and things included. Arts and craft!

There lies a certain guarantee of quality within every new Krystal Klear – especially on Running Back. After the still heavily rotating Piano Banana release, it is time for the versatile and valuable Connect EP. The four tracks here hit the mark between the confusion or disorientation of any dance music DJ and producer during lockdown, and the genre’s intrinsic ethos of better days , utopia and a certain relentless drive. Traces of such energies henpeck the Irish producer’s work and can also be found here.

Mega Chords kick off the round dance. Imagine the French Touch retouched, updated, refined and designed to empty the serotonin storage. Our Signal puts the lid back on the happiness box, paints a picture of pain and romance and is equally informed by Larry Heard mood boards as it is by Paninaro poetry. Flip it over for a stream lined and well-crafted tour de DJ. If there ever was something like a fair-spoken banger Telephone is the one. A racing motorbike on standby. Last, but not least, Paris Metro is a power house with a creative arrangement and an inventive spin that exceeds the limits of a normal DJ tool. Modern dance music with classic tropes and lots of strobes.

Krystal Klear gets that balance right. Mega Chords indeed.

25/03/2022

Chinaski / S-F-X's debut seems predestined to resume these discussions. Drenched in sepia colors and faded VHS tapes memories, fed by a science-fiction that never became a fact, essentially made with the ultramodern instruments of yesteryear (see back cover for further reference) that became redundant through their own relatives and a need to ensure efficiency (time, space, money), it's either concept art, an ode to Disco Piu, a postcard from the early days of Frankfurt's Dorian Gray or the search and itch for a time machine. All of the debate above is rendered useless by the title though: No Pop, No Fun! And those are the main musical reference points here: instrumental pop that you can dance to, pastel melodies that stick with you and fun frequencies. Downtempo ballads for video game characters in love meet cabriolet anthems and scooter songs. Perfectly composed and carefully made. If John Hughes would have ever aspired to make a high school movie set in a post-apocalyptic Italy: this is what the score would probably sound like.

Chinaski's debut on Running Back. No Pop No Fun is out now!Download: https://bit.ly/3viYlvU / Stream: https://spoti.fi/3M0uHRMhttps://runningbackrecords.band...
