Maya would have been 95 today—and I would be throwing her a BIG party, as I did every 5th year since she turned 60. I grew up reading her insightful books and memorizing her poems. When I finally got to meet her in my late 20’s she made me a meal and read me Paul Laurence Dunbar poetry. From that point on, I sat at her table and listened to her words of wisdom for years.
“When people tell you who they are, believe them— the FIRST time!”
“When you know better, you do better.”
“When you learn, teach. When you get, give.”
And a mind treasure of other wisdoms.
I value those gifts to me even more now that she’s gone. But more importantly, I still feel her everywhere. In the stillness, in conversations, in sun rises and sunsets, her Spirit abides with me, greeting me as she always did, “Hello, you darling girl.”

from the brilliant .oaten of SEED - Eating Disorder Support] on Happy world mental health day! Or unhappy world mental health day? That's the thing we never know with mental health do we?

The 1st pic is to celebrate my 1 year anniversary of being manager for SEED - Eating Disorder Support] it was actually on Thursday, but that day I woke up crying, stress spots, bloated face and swollen, red lumpy eye lids. Mentally drained, stressed & a mix of feelings & emotions. I love my work for seed with all my heart but my god running a charity is hard. The highs, the lows, the fight, the let downs. But we do it because we care and we have been there. We want to make sure no one feels the pain we did. It matters.

You know like sometimes you wake up with a cold or a headache or another physical health ailment... The same happens with mental health to millions of people worldwide. Yet it doesn't get the same action or reaction or priority as any of the former. Real people, really in pain are lost and forgotten too many times. And I don't understand why. We talk about mental health and raise awareness but the time needs to come for better support and early intervention.

The 2nd pic is me at 19 years old after my heart attack battling with anorexia & bulimia. The sadness in my eyes. Back in an eating disorder unit. The fact I only got help after nearly dying. Early intervention is key & we must do better. The government must work with us to create better.

As the 3rd & 4th pics state in an article out this week in the .Independent that two thirds of teenagers are struggling with Eating Disorders. I make my thoughts heard and I will continue to do so until change comes.

I pride myself on hope & postitvity so that's how I will end this post. Because recovery is possible. Pic 1 v pic 2...thats a journey. There is life. Please bring yourself that chance by reaching out. By seeking help. By knowing your Thoughts & feelings matter, they are real & they deserve care, support & attention. You are not alone and every day is a new day. Feel it, acknowledge it, be it. Its OK to not be OK. You matter ♥ 🌱

Posted • Our inboxes are flooded this morning with the same heartbreaking question: "What do I advise women to do if they're approached by a lone, male officer?" Our answer, in memory of is the above.

Please note: this is by no means a perfect answer. Resisting arrest for a woman of colour especially, or a woman of visible faith, or with language barriers, may aggravate the situation. What we really need is change coming from within - for rules to change so that NO male officer can arrest a woman from here on out without at least one officer onsite or called to the scene.

But until the Met Police actually issues a statement on changes that will be implemented and assurances as to timeframes, this is the best we can advise for now...

Hello pussycats! Do you know your gynae anatomy?
We're firmly out of August now, which means it's for the (w)hole of September.
Here I am in all my glory at HQ, with a (hopefully) helpful reel showing you the different parts of our gynae anatomy.
My favourite phrase ever is that 'the va**na is on the inside - it's got the word in IN it - va**Na'.
Why does it matter? Knowing the correct names for your womb, ovaries, cervix, v***a and va**na and where they are in/on your body will help you identify when something might not be quite right, and will help you to communicate these changes to your doctor. Read up on website and socials about the different risk factors and symptoms for each of the 5 gynae cancers - the ovaries/fallopian tubes and womb might be near eachother on an anatomical diagram, but womb cancer and ovarian cancer are very different diseases with very different symptoms. For example: womb=bleeding, ovarian=bloating.

A common question our Ask Eve team receives is: 'What do I do? I have been bleeding after s*x, but my doctor won't give me a cervical screening test.'

Answer: If you have any symptoms of cervical cancer, you need a referral to a specialist to investigate them, a cervical screening test is a prevention test, for women and people with a cervix who do not have any symptoms.

During screening a sample of cells is taken from the cervix, using a speculum (to open up the va**na) and a brush. This is then tested for signs of high-risk strains of HPV (the virus which causes 99.8% of cervical cancers. If HPV is there, they then see if there are any precancerous changes to the cells.

If precancerous changes to the cells are found, you will be monitored more closely (more regular screening tests), or the cells can be removed through a treatment called LLETZ, which will stop them getting worse and developing into cancer.

If you have a symptom of cervical cancer, such as abnormal bleeding (after s*x, after the menopause or between periods), pain or discomfort during penetrative s*x, or an unpleasant or foul-smelling discharge, you should get checked by a specialist. Call your GP and have an appointment with them, they should then refer you to a specialist, who will investigate further, most likely with colposcopy (a simple procedure to look at the cervix in more detail)
