This is why we need to spread the culture of prioritizing search. Yes, putting the fire out makes everything better but delaying search or definitively saying it comes second?!?!? Not a fan.

We talked about the need for inspection holes and smoke indicator holes on a flat roof…to clarify the reason we don’t need those on a pitched roof is we already know the structural member and decking material, and we have “eyes” into the attic space. As we’re at the tailboard of the rig we’re looking at the existing openings and using this information to guide our decisions.

At some point we were all new to the job, anxious to learn everything and be an asset to our crew. Know that experience comes with time but while you’re waiting ask questions, learn something from every call, every training, every day. Take pride in where you’re currently at in your career because it’s better than where you were at yesterday.

Thoughts on these door barricades? We wouldn’t know the gate is there on the first door until we force it, then what? The second door is an inward swinging door on the Charlie side of a commercial structure. The difficult part here is we wouldn’t know there’s additional reinforcements until we start since the door is inward swinging the bar is set into the structure not the door like an outward swinging door so no carriage bolt visible. A saw would be ideal for these but the only other take away is they are set in drywall so maybe with a little leverage conventional force could defeat them?

Sometimes it can be hard to be the one “carrying the torch” , being motivated to train, having a good attitude, not complaining when others are. The key to success isn’t just found from within, surround yourself with people who make you better, hold you accountable, continue pushing the boundaries.

Our work day, like most things in life, has few things we can control. How many calls we get, what type of calls, the weather…like I tell my kids all the time, two things we can control are our own attitude and effort! Be intentional with these and good things will happen.

Inspection cut on a flat roof. This little hole can tell us a lot, is there any fire involvement, how long did it take to make this little hole (is it feasible to make a big hole for vent), what is the spacing and orientation of structural members. This is one of those things on the fire ground where taking a minute to do this can pay off in long run. If we come across something unexpected we can ask for more resources or tools to complete the larger hole for vent.
