French Multi-Instrumentalist Bruno Karnel Announces New Album; First Single Out Now

French multi-instrumentalist Bruno Karnel has set March 14th, 2025, as the international release date for his new full-length album, Villa Solitude, to be released via Bitume Productions.

Urban and atmospheric, the music of French multi-instrumentalist Bruno Karnel borrows from various musical currents to create a highly personal style: post-rock, pop, prog, post-punk, metal...

In the footsteps of Las Ilusiones (2021) and Hic sunt dracones (2023), this third album Villa Solitude features eight tracks oscillating between melancholy and hope. Imaginary towns ('Leaving Diaspar'), dystopian urban centers ('Okhta-Tsentr') or cities ravaged by war ('Candlelight City') intersect in this musical travel diary where solitude is only apparent: for an acute ear, there is always a presence, lurking in the shadows of the notes - reassuring or threatening.

More instrumental and vintage than on its two predecessors, BK's music today is heavily influenced by the underground scenes of Central and Eastern Europe: Kauan, A Noend of Mine, Tabór or even Molchat Doma ('Vndadiem').

Like the first two albums, Villa Solitude was recorded and mixed by Florent Morel at Marg'Sound Studio. Thomas 'Plec' Johansson (Pixie Ninja, Molesome, Soilwork...) was in charge of the mastering. The album also benefits from the powerful and precise striking of drummer Basile Combes (Dislimn), and a host of guests, including Matthieu Gajewski (ex-Master Crow) on bass on three tracks, as well as Artem Litovchenko (Thy Catafalque, Sheetel, Abstrakt Lake...) or Polina Faustova (Hans Zimmer) on cello.

DEATH RATTLE show another element of their sound on “Malthusian Dependency,” which comes across slower, heavier and overall doomier. The music video, once again captured by Jonas Em of EmVision Productions, adds to the overall edge of the song.

“We chose ‘Malthusian Dependency’ as our second single because we feel it is probably one of the standout songs on the new album. It was the first song that was written off the album and was the most organic song. It spawned from Ryan and Chris hammering out the riffs down at the studio. We really spent little time refining it when we were tracking because the song felt complete when we walked in. It had elements of what each of us individually loved about music. It had groove elements from Ryan’s favorite bands, it had melodic thrash elements from Trey’s passions, and it had plenty of drum hooks, which Chris loved so much.”

Germany’s Post-Metal Band HAVEN • Band Releases Official Lyric Visualizer for "Idol"

Germany’s Post-Metal band HAVEN releases an official lyric visualizer for "Idol," a track taken from the band's highly anticipated debut album, "Causes", set to release on January 24th via Argonauta Records.

After a mantra-like introduction of the core phrase of the whole album - "All will take from all, an all will flow back into all" - the song starts with a heavy and direct tone.

Engulfed in dissonant, chaotic riffs and abrupt sonic changes lie themes of self-idolization, the need for guidance, trust and dependance, as well as ego and the search for meaning. The lyrics tell a perspective of the realization that in the end it is only ourselves who can judge us.
The song points to the egotistical side of thinking, while also revealing the fact that without an idol and guidance to look to, we can not function - however that figure or idea may be shaping up in each of our lives and manifest itself in our beliefs and minds. There is also the first appearance of an inner voice, a siren, which keeps us safe in our thoughts - confirming our beliefs and notions of the world and ourselves.

"Causes" explores the question of how autonomous we truly are, given our upbringing, experiences, and fears. He strives for catharsis, which is conveyed not only through the lyrics but also reflected in the music. Degreed have been releasing critically acclaimed music since the start of their career with their first album “Life, Love, Loss” in 2010. Over the course of their career, the band has gone from strength to strength with every release, touring and gaining fans all over the world. Their sound mixes classic melodic and hard rock sounds with more contemporary influences, offering the fans a very personal, fresh and exciting mix of great rock music.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the band wasn’t able to tour on the heels of the release of the album “Lost Generation” in 2019. In the beginning there was black metal. The artist Håvard Ellefsen known as the musical entity MORTIIS started out as a bass player in and during the formation of EMPEROR in 1991 and 1992. He is credited on the "Wrath of the Tyrant" demo/album (1992), the "Emperor" EP (1993), and the 1994 7" EP "As the Shadows Rise".

After parting ways with the Norwegian black metal pioneers, MORTIIS embarked on a solo career, the so called 'Era I', that lasted from 1993 until 1999. In this highly creative period, the Norwegian released six full-length albums (including the "The Song of a Long Forgotten Ghost" demo and "Crypt of the Wizard"). His music during this phase was entirely composed on synthesizers. The resulting sound was described by MORTIIS as 'dark dungeon music' and has been named as a fundamental influence on the later dungeon synth genre. On "The Stargate" (1999), the last album of this era, a wider range of instruments was implemented as well as additional vocals from Sarah Jezebel Deva.

In the next decade, MORTIIS evolved into a band that marked the beginning of the short-lived 'Era II', which only consists of the rather electropop oriented 2001-album "The Smell of Rain". When 'The Grudge' came out in 2004, the album had a hard impact of the scene and started 'Era III'. The Norwegian and his band had turned to heavy industrial rock and as a result made many new friends. A host of musician friends gathered on the remix album "Some Kind of He**in" (2007) that included contributions by and collaborations with THE KOVENANT, VELVET ACID CHRIST, and GIRLS UNDER GLASS among many others.

'Era III' ended with MORTIIS releasing "Perfectly Defect" as a free internet download album in 2010 due to a serious disenchantment with the music industry. This was followed by a factual hiatus between 2011 and 2015, although it was never officially announced. In 2016, the next full-length "The Great Deceiver" surprised global followers of the band that had long hoped for a new release. Although the style of the previous phase is largely continued, it is named 'Era 0'. On the gargantuan remix album "The Great Corrupter", MORTIIS again teamed up with a host of exciting artists including musicians from GODFLESH, FRONTLINE ASSEMBLY, DIE KRUPPS, MERZBOW, and APOPTYGMA BERZEK among a multitude of others.

What comes around, goes around and the now experienced and matured musician decided to return to the music of 'Era 1' as the 2020 album "Spirit of Rebellion" was born out of a revisiting of the 1994 "Ånden som gjorde opprør'. In 2023, Mortiis released a reworked version of the quintessential album "Født til å herske".

During most of his career MORTIIS has performed with a mask and face prosthetic that turned his stage persona into an otherworldly being. Over the year, his looks have changed and evolved. For a time during 'Era 0', his live concept even abandoned the wearing of the iconic mask. MORTIIS' stage entity has often been compared with a troll – a creature of Nordic folklore, which it was never intended to be according to the artist.

So where will MORTIIS go from here? As an artist, the Norwegian has offered a wide stylistic range of sounds and never proofed to be predictable and has resisted any attempt to be pigeon-holed. A glimpse onto some of the many collaborations on this album might provide some hints: Among many others, the upcoming full-length features Thorsten Quaeschning (TANGERINE DREAM), Christopher Amott (BLACK EARTH, formerly ARCH ENEMY), and Matthew Setzer (SKINNY PUPPY). Well, everybody just will have to wait and see, until his forthcoming new album is going to be revealed in 2025.
