Kaboogie—a name that once resonated through the heart of Dublin’s underground electronic scene. Launched in 2006, Kaboogie was more than just a collective; it was a movement that electrified the city’s nightlife for six exhilarating years.
The brainchild of a group of passionate music lovers, Kaboogie brought a raw, unfiltered energy to the scene, hosting over 100 events that mashed together genres like breakcore, ragga jungle, filthy dancehall, dubstep, and grime. As the founder reflects, “We loved lots of heavier genres of electronic club music...and wanted a space to mash them all up and have fun. And we did.” Fast forward to today, and the founder has traded in late-night
sets for lecture halls.
Now a lecturer in sound design and audio post-production, he shares his knowledge with the next generation of creatives. “I teach very practical subjects—location sound for Film/TV, sound design/audio post-production, and interactive/immersive visual media content. I feel very lucky to do so,” he says, with a modest chuckle at the title “professor.” His journey from DJing to academia was a natural progression, influenced by a move away from Dublin in 2016 and the joys and responsibilities of fatherhood.
Now, with the release of his latest project, there’s a sense of rejuvenation. “I think my Rudimentary Release will kick off a new musical journey,” he muses. His passion for audiovisual work, spatial sound design, and new media techniques has reignited his creative flame. “For a long time, I put pressure on myself, and that weighed on me,
stripping away the fun and even stopping me from wanting to make music. I feel more balanced now, and the fun is back...thanks, Rudimentary.”
