What if - What if - He’s really not from this planet? What if he’s indeed sent by whoever above us to pass a message? That music is the only savior, not politics, religion or philosophy? And we were so in love with our reality that we didn’t listen to him?

What planet is this anyway?

I promised to use instincts more than anything when compiling these mixes. It’s Sun Ra, after all people. So where are we?

Egypt, right. Land of the dark soil. Pyramid capital. The Antique Blacks. A place built by unknown ancestors or outsiders. Very much past but very much in the future. Now all hail to Ra.

Herman Blount. Le Sony'r Ra. Sun Ra.
Musicology. Astrology. Etymology.
Ark. Arm. Art.

If there’s a place to be, Chicago in the 40s might be the one. Sun Ra was there and he knew. Not only he knew he himself was a part in this dramatic and profound revolution, musically and socially. When he arrived in Chicago in 1941 he’s a student. When he left in 1961 he became the maestro. Building an ark in a Windy City is about the most heroic thing a man can do. But a space ship? Heck yeah.

So, eclipse huh? I heard about it only last week. Do you know how long I’ve been wanting to host a Sun Ra retrospective? Looks like both of them will happen today. Presenting my last curated series before bidding farewell to WTJU after 7 years of serving, for my next five shows on Point Of Departure, we gonna listen to extensive music created by one of the ultimate charisma in the space of jazz and electronics. Chapter I: Alabama, Coleman Hawkins, Fletcher Henderson, Black Mass, Sunrise… Let’s travel.
