I saw Jim Thorpe who played on the PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions on Golf Channel the other day talking about his career and his Jim Thorpe Invitational where 160-plus golfers, all minorities from the ages of 8 to 46 played in the tournament. It’s never been done before.”
I immediately went looking for some interviews I have done with Jim who as a Afro American professional golfer continues to pave the way for others like Charlie Sifford and Lee Elder did for players like Jim Thorpe. Found this one from 2015 at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai
It was wonderful to see Jim so enthusiastic about how he is giving back. I got to know Jim a bit when he played in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai and we would do fun interviews. On this day in 2015 he was at the Mitsubishi however not playing. I had recently seen the documentary "Uneven Fairways" about Afro-American golfers who paved the way for the Jim Thorpes to play on the PGA TOUR like Jim Thorpe throughout his career was paving the way for others. We had a thoughtful conversation. I hope you will listen.
Dave Marr III who was with Golf Channel at the time and is well known and respected for his knowledge of the game joined us. Dave learned as a keiki when his father Dave Marr played on the PGA TOUR and was a respected broadcaster as well.
I feel so grateful for how many people I have been able to be around and have interviewed and shared aloha from having been around sports and the game of golf.
After my talk story with Jim ... I share my thoughts about what I want to do, what I am doing etc ... It's 2015 when I did this radio show that was also streaming and I remember I loved that the drop down box on the ESPNHawaii web site included me with Mike and Mike in the Morning and Colin Cowherd. The espn affliate here would only save 6 shows and it because of that I started a podcast as a place to store my shows.
Listening to what I talked about in this show when I share some thoughts is s pretty close to kind of thoughts I had this morning. Felt so familiar.
It was 2015 and I also talk about how I wake up every morning and listen to Clff Russell (RIP) on 1250 AM. How Cliff became host of the show when Angelo Henderson (RIP) who I had listened to every day passed. I think I also listened to Mildred Gadis on 1250.
I talk about Slow Roll ... City Bird, Run Detroit and many other places that I was becoming acquainted with 8-10 years ago.
I talk about how we did good things back in our day in Detroit and how many are doing good things when I did this show 8 years ago.
Also talk about people doing good things here on the Big Island of Hawaii ... and it all reminds me that at the heart of so much of what I feel is what a difference we can make when we say nice things ... about the things that deserve our saying nice things.
I hope you listen to my conversation with Jim Thorpe and rest of my talk story sharing my feelings about lot of topics. Aloha.
Jim Thorpe, PGA Champions Tour player weighs in on The Golf Channel documentary he is a part of called "Uneven Fairways". It celebrates African-American contributions to golf and certainly documents some of the challenges they endured before being allowed on the PGA TOUR. Jim, who joined the PGA TOU...
