While we were waiting for Hoodad to finish work we had a play around with a ladder. Going under it, touching it etc. It's not like Jayce is going to encounter many ladders but the resilience and curiosity he got from a positive encounter with what may be a new and scary object is what counts. What do we say to breed stereotypes? No way! Yet again in greyhound groups a casting call was shared for a greyhound who could sit, drop, stay and recall. Nothing groundbreaking, right? ‘Do you need 11 separate greyhounds?’ ‘They’re still looking for one 😂’ ‘I started to laugh at “well trained greyhound”’ No other breed is stereotyped in such a way and this ‘untrainable’ stereotype is damaging and dangerous. It could dissuade a prospective adopter (oh I don’t want a dog who’s hard to train/ I want to do obedience activities with my dog). Or, it could be the difference between an owner teaching essential safety skills to a dog (stay, place and recall) because ‘why bother if they’re untrainable’ or not trying what could be a great enrichment activity because they’re ‘dumb dogs’. To be clear, I am not saying that greyhounds can’t be lazy or sleep a lot and that some may not enjoy training or that it may not be a priority in your relationship with your dog. Have you heard of dog nail files?! Since we made the decision for Jayce to be in booties on any pavement it’s meant that we’ve had to be more on top of making sure his nails don’t grow too long. Getting a nail file for his front nails will mean less frequent groomer appointments (he doesn’t like those) and a far more rewarding/ less aversive experience than us trying to use a dremel at home. More broadly they’re a fantastic tool for any dogs who don’t love their paws being touched or handled. I was a bit worried about Jayce ‘getting’ it as he doesn’t really tend to scratch or dig at things which is why I moved his leg for him so he could connect the movement and contact with the nail file as the reward. That said, he got it astoundingly quickly (less than five minutes) and his nails are now a perfect length too. The @diggerdognailfile is fantastic as the ‘reward’ is built into the use of the product which means it’s easier to time it. Also, seeing the reward be hidden from them may encourage dogs to paw at it naturally without any need for prompting like Jayce did. They’ve currently got 20% off in the lead up to Christmas so jump on it. This is a useful tool, bonding activity and enrichment for your dog rolled into one.
