Yeeyan is the largest community translation site in China with more than 400,000 registered users and 30,000 community translators. Community translators use their spare time and multilingual skills to translate interesting stuff they read on the Web and share them with Chinese readers. By their contribution, nearly 100 translated articles are published with gusto on the site every day. The audien
ce, including many media reporters and editors, browse the site to learn the up-to-date information and knowledge, as well as the new trends of the world. In October 2011, collaborating with Citic Press Yeeyan organized the translation work of Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson. Five translators chosen out of more than 400 candidates had finished the translation within a month; the Chinese edition was, thereby, published the same day as its original English edition worldwide. Other important translation works done by Yeeyan using the so-called “Crowdsourcing” model include Out of Control by Kevin Kelly, Decision Point by George Bush, etc. The project aims at translating books in public domain from foreign languages to Chinese. Community translators are organized by a well-designed process, collaboration is encouraged and the finalized translations are published directly through e-book distribution channels. Traditional publishers then select their interested works and publish the paperback editions. By participating, collaborating and contributing to the translation process, community translators are rewarded via a revenue sharing plan.
