On this day in 2009, Virender Sehwag played perhaps his most brutal Test innings - and there were plenty to choose from.

He smashed a Sri Lanka attack containing Muttiah Muralitharan and Rangana Herath for 293 from a mere 254 balls, with 40 fours and seven sixes.

Sehwag and Don Bradman are the only players to hit 290 or more in a Test innings three times. A simply phenomenal opening batter.

Happy birthday, VVS Laxman, the slayer of Australia.

In the 2000s, no one scored more Test runs or made more hundreds against the Aussies, with Laxman averaging 61.84 against them in that decade.

His 281 following on in 2001 is considered by many to be the greatest Test innings ever played, and ended a world record run of 16 consecutive Test wins for Australia.

And he did it all with a sublime, silky style that was the equal of any.
