Gold Head of Horus

Old Kingdom, 6th Dynasty, ca. 2345-2181 BC.

Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 32158

This exquisite gold head of the falcon god Horus, lord of the sun and patron deity of kingship, was found below the floor of the main chamber of his temple at Hierakonpolis, north of Edfu.

The head, which is made out of beaten gold, was fixed to a copper statue of the falcon Horus. It is topped by a twin-plumed headdress and decorated with a royal uraeus, or rearing cobra. The eyes are inlaid with rounded, polished, obsidian pieces, very similar to that of the real bird.

The ‘melted’ stairs and fascinating reliefs in Temple of Hathor in Dendera, Egypt.

Temple has been modified on same site starting as far back as Middle Kingdom (2030-1650 BC). Existing structure began construction in late Ptolemaic period at time of Ptolemy Auletes, 54 BC.

Statuette of Duamutef

This Jackal-headed god statuette, one of the four gods protecting the organs of Tutankhamun, is easily mistaken for Anubis but is in fact Duamutef “He who adores his mother”.

Duamutef is one of the Four Sons of Horus, to whose particular protection the stomach was entrusted once it had been removed from the body during mummification. He himself was protected or helped by the goddess Neith. The god was closely connected with the east.

Asyut Dog

The spectacular “Asyut Dog” is a large limestone statue of what may be a dog, a wolf or a golden jackal – the latter is the most likely. The statue is thought to come from the area surrounding the city of Asyut in Middle Egypt, and more specifically from the vicinity of its sacred animal cemetery.

In ancient Egypt, sculptures of dogs and jackals were indeed significant and had various symbolic meanings. Asyut, located in Upper Egypt, was an important center where such sculptures were found.

Sculptures of dogs and jackals in Asyut and other parts of Egypt were often placed in tombs and funerary contexts, serving as protective guardians and guides for the deceased in the afterlife.

The imperial sceptre of the Roman Emperor Maxentius (306 - 312 CE) - the only surviving example known.

Topped with a crystal sphere, it was discovered near the base of the Palatine Hill in 2006, alongside several imperial banners.

The Venus Callipygia (with the beautiful buttocks) is one of the most beautiful examples of Greek sculpture that have come down to us. It is a copy made in Roman times. Due to the brazen pose made even more realistic by the typical executive style of the time, although always admired and jealously guarded, it was for a certain period the subject of censorship and moved to the secret collection of the Farnese family, away from prying eyes.

In 1786 AD, it was transferred to Naples. The work depicts a woman, probably caught in the moment in which she is about to take a bath, who lifts her dress and turns an admiring gaze to her perfect B-side.

The gold mask of Tutankhamun on display in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 60672, upper floor.

The mask of Tutankhamun is an example of the highest artistic and technical achievements of the ancient Egyptians in the New Kingdom. The exact portrayal of the king’s facial features achieved here made it possible for his soul to recognize him and return to his mummified body. Thus ensuring his resurrection.

After being buried for over 3,000 years, it was excavated by Howard Carter in 1925 from tomb KV62 in the Valley of the Kings. Covering the head of the wrapped mummy in its coffin and activated by a magical spell, no.151b from the Book of the Dead, the mask ensured more protection for the king’s body.

On his brow is the kingly uraeus: the Wadjet or rearing cobra, representing Lower Egypt, combined with the vulture Nekhbet of Upper Egypt.

The combination of the two is symbolic of his domination of both lands. That is strikingly similar to the Narmer Palette"s message of control of both halves of Egypt.
