Don McLain joined WOHS in Shelby, North Carolina, in 1948 and served as sports director, staff announcer, and continuity director. In 1955, he became commercial manager of the station. McLain, a Navy veteran, was born and reared in Albemarle, North Carolina, and worked at radio stations in Albemarle, Forest City, and Gaffney before moving to Shelby.

He was twice honored with a community service award by a local sports writers' and sportscasters' organization. He left radio in 1962 to become manager of the Hartsville, South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. – Stanley News and Press, Feb. 1, 1955, Charlotte News, May 4, 1962

Detail from an NBC booklet in the LAB collection, for a serious discussion program that never apparently never made it to the air. Artist uncredited. Undated but mid-1940s we’re guessing.

The bag is probably meant to be a mail sack, but when I first saw this picture I thought the caption should be "Public Service Programming: Broadcasting's Heavy Burden."

When Mackie Quave was a senior in high school, he won the radio announcing division of the 1939 National Forensic League Finals in Hollywood, CA. When he returned home to Asheville, NC, he quickly got a job with a local radio station. In 1945, he joined the staff of WKIX (later WMSC) in Columbia, SC as program director.

While at WKIX, the University of South Carolina offered him a chance to teach radio part-time. He took it and later established the campus radio station, WUSC. He moved to rival station WIS as assistant program director and chief announcer in 1947 and remained there for 14 years. – "Mackie Quave, A Man Called 'Cactus'," The Columbia Record, November 15, 1969.

Wich Stand was a 1950s style coffee shop in Los Angeles, California featuring a tilting blue roof and 35-foot spire, designed by renowned architect Eldon Davis.

The Wich Stand had two locations within Los Angeles. One building exists and is located on Slauson Avenue at Overhill in View Park-Windsor Hills, an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County near Inglewood. A critic said its "plunging dart of a sign keeps it from spinning off into space," and it is a surviving example of Googie architecture. The other was located within City of Los Angeles proper at Figueroa and Florence.

The Slauson location opened in 1957, fell upon hard times in the mid-1980s and declined and was vandalised, including a gutting of the floors and ceilings, after the restaurant closed in 1988. It was declared a landmark by Los Angeles County in 1989. It was refurbished and reopened as the Simply Wholesome restaurant and health food store. Source: Wikipedia
