This week seafarers’ unions won a new right for seafarers under the Labour Organization to be given internet access onboard. We’ve also secured a change that bans shipowners from charging crew unreasonable fees for data, which some shipowners currently do –even for tiny amounts of data.

At least three people died in when the oil storage and production vessel, FPSO Trinity Spirit, exploded last week and four crew are still missing, the operating company said on Monday.

The vessel had 10 crew on board when it exploded on Wednesday, Nigeria's Shebah Exploration & Production Company Ltd (SEPCOL) said, adding that three were found dead on Sunday after three people had been found alive last week.

"Our priority remains focused towards establishing the whereabouts, safety, and security of the four crew members still missing," the company said.

The  Spirit floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel was not producing oil at the time of the blast, after the consortium running the oilfield, including SEPCOL, lost its production license in 2019.

Julietta D’s anchor could no longer hold due to the stormy weather, after which the ship collided with a tanker ship in an anchorage area near IJmuiden. After the collision, the Julietta D took on water, and eighteen crew members had to be taken off-board. A captain and first mate are required to remain on a ship unless strictly necessary, for example, if their lives are in danger. The maritime police are now investigating whether or not they rightly left the ship.

The two crew members, both Russian, were detained on Tuesday and are being interrogated, according to the spokesman of the National Unit. The case will then be handed over to the department of the Public Prosecution Service which handles safety-related incidents on the North Sea.

The Julietta D, which was flying under the Maltese flag, had crew members from Ukraine and the Philippines on board, as well as Russians.

Two ships have collided off the Dutch coast in the storm-hit North Sea and one began taking on water, prompting an evacuation, according to emergency services.

The Julietta D, a freighter with 18 crew members on board, collided with another boat about 32km (20 miles) west of the port of Ijmuiden, Edward Zwitser, a spokesman for the Royal Dutch Lifeboat Company, said on Monday.

The other boat, an oil and chemicals tanker, was also damaged but was able to continue its voyage, the Dutch coast guard said in a statement.

It said that all crew members were rescued, but did not immediately provide more details of the rescue on the high seas amid powerful winds.

Three helicopters, including one from Belgium, were involved in the rescue operation.

The Maltese-registered Juliette D suffered damage “that poses direct danger for the 18 crew on board”, Zwitser told The Associated Press news agency in a telephone interview.

The captain and first officer of a ship that ran aground on coral reef in Mauritius have been found guilty of endangering safe navigation.

The captain, Sunil Kumar Nandeshwar, admitted to drinking moderately during a birthday party onboard before the MV Wakashio ran aground on 25 July 2020.

About 1,000 tonnes of fuel leaked into the water, sparking an ecological emergency.
Mauritius is home to world-renowned coral reefs, and popular with tourists.
Sunil Kumar Nandeshwar and his first officer, Hitihanillage Subhoda Janendra Tilakaratna were found guilty under the 2007 Merchant shipping act by a court in the capital, Port Louis.
Nandeshwar said he had given orders to approach Mauritian waters so that the crew could get phone reception to make calls to their families.
"The sea was bad but the visibility was clear and it was safe to navigate," Nandeshwar said. "At one point, the ship could not move and had touched the sea floor.
"Since I had a few drinks, it did not seem worthwhile to intervene and it did not occur to me that we were sailing that close."
