Scarsdale was founded in 1701 and has a rich history dating back over three centuries.

In 1666 during Charles the Second's reign, a sixth son Caleb was born in the family of Mayor Heathcote of Chesterfield in the Hundred of Scarsdale, Derbyshire, England. Some twenty-six years later, after his intended wife had transferred her affections to one of his older brothers, a disappointed Caleb Heathcote took his patrimony and set sail for New York. Prospering in trade, he soon became one of the leading men of the colony and began to buy up land in Westchester. At the end of the century he purchased from Ann Richbell the claims her husband had established to land running nine miles back from Long Island Sound to the Bronx River and averaging two miles in width.

During the early 20th century, as the craze for Tudor architecture swept across America, Scarsdale residents sought to infuse their town with the charm of Old England. However, instead of merely replicating the style, they embarked on a daring venture to acquire authentic pieces of history. Salvaged oak beams, stone carvings, and even entire sections of manor walls were shipped across the Atlantic Ocean, finding new life in the tranquil streets of Scarsdale.

In the 18th century, Scarsdale was home to a significant Quaker community, contributing to its cultural diversity.

The 1828 Quaker Meeting House has given visual recognition to a barely noticed piece of Scarsdale’s early history. Members of the Religious Society of Friends were among the very first white settlers of Scarsdale in 1723 when John Cornwall (an early version of the Cornell name) started farming on some of the land he bought ten years earlier from a fellow Quaker, Samuel Palmer of Mamaroneck. The Quakers put up the first house of worship in Scarsdale in 1768 when they moved the Mamaroneck meeting house they had built in 1739 on the Westchester Path, now the Boston Post Road, to a wooded lot on Weaver Street at Quaker Ridge Road.

Equestrian Tradition:

Scarsdale has a long-standing equestrian tradition, with horseback riding being a popular recreational activity for residents.
During the summer day camp, children will learn the basics of horse care, while participating in crafts and games. In a special event at the center, adult riders can even mingle with other riders over food, wine, and good conversation on Thursday nights. There is something here for everyone.

It all began when twelve influential community figures gathered to honor the remarkable George Clifton, a highly respected former Village Trustee and President of the Town Club, for his unwavering dedication to bettering civic life. As a token of their esteem, they presented him with a silver bowl. Little did they know that this act of appreciation would evolve into a cherished tradition, spanning decades and symbolizing the essence of community spirit in Scarsdale.

The Underhill House, Scarsdale's oldest farmhouse, predates the Manor of Scarsdale, established in 1701. Built beside a deep spring along an Indian trail, it evolved over time. Initially owned by Thomas Hadden and it later expanded with a west wing. Benjamin Underhill, in the late 18th century, connected the springhouse to the main structure for his large family. In 1900, the Scarsdale Estate Company acquired the property, heralding the beginning of upscale development along Heathcote Road.

During the American Revolution, our very own junction of Garden Road and Mamaroneck Road was the site of a brief clash between Continental and British forces.

This piece of our past inspired none other than James Fenimore Cooper to pen "The Spy: A Tale of the Neutral Ground" while he lived here.

Question: How did Scarsdale get its name?

Scarsdale was settled in 1701 when Caleb Heathcote, a merchant from New York City, purchased the land from the Wappinger Native American tribe and received a royal patent for the area from King William III.

Heathcote named the settlement after his family's ancestral home in Derbyshire, England.
