New video over on the EquipMeOT YouTube Channel (link in bio). I created this video to give extra information about which mobility device would be most beneficial for a variety of situations and functional considerations! (Not trying to step on PT’s toes, so it’s mostly a conversation of function and safety 😉).

This trick is worthy of your accessibility evaluation tool bag. Bring a stroller into community settings and make note of your challenges. I have found many environments to be difficult to navigate with a stroller, which is a good indication of poor accessibility for any alternative mobility strategies (i.e. manual or powered wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, crutches, etc.).

I did not know this trick until I had children myself, but since then I continue to bring a stroller with me to any new community environment that may be an option for client community outings in the future. Even if I don’t have my kids with me 😉

The freedom to bathe without fear, pain, or exhaustion is one of my highest priorities for every client I work with. In fact, as an OT, helping someone with complex challenges bathe for the first time is one of the most fulfilling activities I could accomplish.

Shower seating can be overwhelming if you aren’t aware of all the possible options. This guide is meant to steer your search based in the types and reasons why each type may be appropriate for you or your clients needs.

Share, save and feel free to leave me your suggestions or experiences with bathing!

I adore doing home evaluations! As an OT working in the community, i honed my home evaluation process and my bag of essential tools. This list is not exhaustive but it’s a great place to start!

I’ve created this guide to sliding transfer boards that highlights common types and the pros and cons to each. Slide board transfers were a source of immense anxiety during my early years of practice. They aren’t easy and often require trial and error to get right, but for many, they are the only way to move between surfaces safely.

Stay tuned as I am working through a YouTube series on EquipMeOT that will give even more insight into completing common slide board transfers!

Home Care (adult) is my favorite treatment environment because it’s so incredibly authentic. You will see all the challenges faced by a client and their caregivers in the environment that matters most! It’s intimate, challenging, exciting and sometimes a bit frustrating (like all settings).

This resource and its pediatric counterpart over .sassy.ot will provide a great depth of information for those considering home care as a professional opportunity!

I spent the weekend in my garden and find the effort so incredibly therapeutic. I wanted to come here and share some of my favorite tools and modification strategies to make gardening accessible for a large number of people of all ages and ability levels!

I love a gift that comes from the heart but also makes an impact on the quality of life! The men in my life don’t always want to admit they need some help, but no worries, these gift ideas can lend a hand without standing out!

Being inundated by news of natural disasters and tragedy has reminded me how vital it is to have a plan! Whether you are disabled or not, it’s best not to wait when it comes to disaster prep.

Power assist or electric lift recliners are an incredibly popular choice for many individuals struggling with pain associated with transfers, positioning, or swelling management. However, despite the many advantages, there are some significant disadvantages of relying on a power assist recliner.

The old mantra, “if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it” comes to mind. If this is fully understood and appreciated, the power assist recliner can be an awesome tool for you or your patients/loved ones!

I am working on a video that will highlight these concepts in a more visual way! Coming soon 😉

Fall is my favorite season. The cooler weather, warm natural colors, delicious seasonal recipes and the slow descent into holiday season 😊

But…for all it’s good qualities, fall brings some serious demands. Keeping up with the yard work and holiday prep can be exhausting for some and debilitating or impossible for others.

I hope this post can highlight a few ways to improve you or your loved ones (or patients) abilities to accomplish the work of fall without having to miss out on all the fun!

I 🧡 Halloween. It runs in the family. My parents always let me express myself freely (as you can probably tell by my antics on this page…) and celebrate the day with a wild costume and as much candy as I could haul.

But, what really stuck with me is the feeling of endless possibility and human connection. A little bit of magic, some spooky effects, and for one night, the ability to wonder up to strangers homes (this was something that has served me well as a home health care specialist 😂) and gather as a community!

I wish each and every one of you an enjoyable day filled with just a little bit of extra magic and joy 🎃🧡

And, as always, thank you so much for your incredible support on this journey!

Here is an additional resource for those who expressed interest in a written resource for my review of the Carex and Medline transport chairs.

I’m a big fan of transport wheelchairs with proper understanding of their various benefits and limitations. I hope this gives a little more clarity for future users!

**These questions are not the only ones that will need to be asked, but they are an important place to start.**

It is too easy to fall into a routine with medical equipment. We see a diagnosis and we immediately make a mental list of everything we think someone will need. This is a trap that can lead to unnecessary purchases, ineffective solutions, frustration and general displeasure with the therapeutic process. So, let's break down these questions so we can be more client specific and avoid these pitfalls.

1) Why are we recommending this?
Is it necessary, is it appropriate, is it the best option on the market for the person's specific needs? Is it simply what is easiest to get through insurance? Check your bias at the door and recognize the specific needs will be the driving force behind any recommendation.

2) What is the nature of the living environment?
Rental or ownership? Structural considerations, size, barriers, style preferences? Who lives there? Knowing this information before ever making a recommendation will guide decisions.

3) What's the budget (is insurance involved)?
This can be a point of discomfort or even embarrassment for some, so having an open and honest conversation about the budget and what will and won't be covered by insurance is essential to make sure we are being respectful of each individual's financial situation.

4) Who is involved in the care?
This gets missed far too often. Occupational Therapists love to focus on maximizing independence and often forget that a certain level of interdependence is often preferred! Is the equipment you are recommending approved by patients and caregivers alike?

5) Are you actually solving a problem that matters?
Don't forget why we are doing this. Do you know the goals, priorities, and preferences? Do we have a clear picture of the problem and have we explored the options available to solve it?

✨️Lindsay DeLong is our first guest to be in the spotlight in honor of !

✅️ OTs are trained to consider the whole person as well as their environment and to adapt and modify tasks and the environment to increase independence and participation in meaningful activities.

Lindsay is the queen 👑 of this, and I have referred some of my patients to her helpful posts while I worked at Seattle Children's Hospital.

🩷 Thank you Lindsay for sharing your OT journey and helping so many people learn about accessible ways to participate in meaningful daily activities!
