R.I.P. Patricia Chisolm-Miller, McLennan County Commissioner of Precinct 2. The featured guest on Episode 57 of Downtown Depot in February 2019, she was the first woman and first African-American woman elected to the McLennan County Commissioners Court.

I remember Pat telling stories about moving to Waco from Brooklyn in the 5th grade and how “cool” it was to be in school with only other black kids. Later in life, once she better understood segregation and its impact, she pursued political science and a life of public service. Her civil rights activism with the Rev. Wilbert Austin helped make Waco a more equitable place.

My condolences to her family and friends, Precinct 2, and the entire Waco community. Click the link in bio to hear her Downtown Depot interview.

Congrats to and on the well-deserved recognition! Both these winners spin out some of the state’s most unique BBQ while staying staying true to Central Texas roots.

Here’s a sample from and the team’s reviews:

“Highlights [at Guess] include a brisket melt with cheddar, caramelized onion, and house aioli on Texas toast; fried baby back ribs; and a fresh broccoli salad that might help you justify ordering a few extra menu items. Don’t skip the desserts; all are made in-house, including a heavenly single-serving coconut cream pie.”

“[At Helberg] we found ourselves focused on the pork steak, the smoked chicken (also fried for extra-crispy skin), and the toothsome sausages. The highlights among the side dishes were the smoked-cheddar-and-Gouda mac and cheese and the collard greens. A family-recipe banana pudding was decadently creamy—we would have gone back for more if we hadn’t already stuffed ourselves silly.”

“James Andrew Harris shook the science world in 1969 for two reasons. First, he co-discovered elements 104 and 105 on the periodic table, a massive accomplishment. Second, he was the first African American in history to discover an element. James Harris was a true pioneer, and he worked hard his entire life to make room for African Americans in the sciences.

James Harris started his education and his life here in Waco, and he went on to change both the scientific community and the black community. Harris is still remembered today as an African American innovator and hero who not only blazed the trail himself, but who worked hard to make sure other black students could follow in his footsteps. Nuclear scientist Darleane Hoffman said of Harris, ‘From the first time I met him in the early sixties to the last time on the day he passed away, he was upbeat, cheerful, and a pleasure to be around.’”
