No offense, but the idea that 'friends are only there when they need something/check on you only when they need something' seems immature. To me, true friends may not always be physically present, but they will stand by you when you need them the most. We all have our own lives, our own challenges, so we shouldn't expect our friends to constantly keep tabs on us or ask how we are every day. A friend not reaching out daily doesn't diminish their friendship. What truly matters is their support when you need them.
P.S. Just because you are the person they turn to when they need help doesn't mean they only value you for that. It means you are one of the friends they trust the most because they know they can rely on you.
