Ohio Mysteries We are Paula, Steve, Mike and Dan - bringing you a new tale from Ohio every Sunday and Wednesday!

02/07/2025

Hi everybody!
We wanted to take a moment and let you know about a change in our scheduling.

Beginning this Sunday, Ohio Mysteries will offer one episode a week ----- dropping every Sunday at 8 p.m.

Paula will continue to give you stories about Ohio in her special storytelling style twice a month.

And Dan ----- host of Ohio Mysteries: Backroads ----- will continue to share stories about Ohio through special guests and authors.

Paula and Dan will alternate every other Sunday so you will continue to get new content every week.

It has been our great privilege to serve you these past eight years. The pace of two episodes a week has given us a catalogue of more than 700 stories — all of them still available on your favorite podcast app.

In the meantime, we hope this new routine will allow us time to continue finding exciting content so we can provide you with scary, fun, or inspiring tales for a long time to come.

From Paula, Steve and Dan - we can't thank you enough for all of your support. Have an amazing holiday weekend, and we'll see you right here Sunday night!

Coming tonight....

In 1942, Hi**er had 8 saboteurs sent to America to begin a campaign of bombing industries and transportation routes in order to slow down their support of allies in World War II. Submarines dropped off four agents on a New York beach, and four more in Florida. Their plan: To meet on July 4 in Cincinnati, Ohio and coordinate attacks, which included blowing up locks along the Ohio River. What happened next? We'll tell you tonight on our latest episode!

Dropping tonight....

In 2000, a badly decomposed body was found floating in the Great Miami River in Montgomery County. The coroner could tell quickly that the remains belonged to an elderly black woman. But which one? Because in the previous two years, TWO elderly black women had vanished from their homes with no explanation. Within hours, the coroner was able to give closure to one family; the other still waits for an answer.

Our latest drop...

Cincinnati has a unique lizard population, finger-sized reptiles that grew from a handful of Mediterranean crawlies smuggled home by a boy in the 1950s. The 1960s saw the introduction of black squirrels to the campus of Kent State. And in southern Ohio, a destructive breed of boar - the "feral swine" - has been an unwelcome guest since the 1980s. Come learn about some surprising animal populations in the Buckeye State.

Dropped last night, by our Backroads team:

Dan is joined by author Neil Sater, an author of historical fiction, whose recent book is a mystery involving the Gnaddenhutten Massacre: the killing of 96 pacifist Moravian Native Americans by US Militiamen on March 8, 1782.
Neil's book weaves history with contemporary mystery as a way of offering a different kind of insight into this tragic event.

Happy Mother's Day! What a gorgeous day it is to celebrate, and Steve and I hope you are taking advantage.

We will be taking the night off and Steve will find a nice Rewind to put up tonight. We have both been slammed with spring yardwork lately and kept putting off finishing our new episode. But we'll get it done soon enough and get it up next Sunday!

Thank you for all your support. You are our inspiration and the reason we keep going. 😘

Coming tonight....

A brand new UNRESOLVED: The case of Carol Ann Zastudil. Carol's son, Eric Hoffman, and Perry Township police remember this tragic case from 1983. Carol was a 36-year-old wife and mother of two when someone stabbed her to death in her Stark County home. In addition to the podcast, our UNRESOLVED episodes include stories at beaconjournal.com (tomorrow morning) and in print (Sunday) in collaboration with Akron Beacon Journal reporter Stephanie Warsmith. This time, Canton Repository reporter Nancy Molnar also assisted us!

Hello and hope everyone is having a splendid day! Coming tonight....

To help poor, immigrant Mormons make their way to their new home in Salt Lake City in 1856, church leaders devised an affordable plan. Basically, walk. They provided handcarts for the men to pull as the faithful trudged from Iowa to Utah on foot. But one year, a couple of parties numbering nearly 1,000 souls started late in the season, and a fifth of them would starve or freeze to death before getting there. We tell the story of the "Handcart Pioneers" and the heroic role of Ohio native Levi Savage.

Dropping tonight...

Ohio landed a rare boxing match in 1975 when Mohammad Ali agreed to fight a scrapper from New Jersey - Chuck Wepner. Meanwhile, across the country on a closed-circuit TV in California, an out-of-work actor named Sylvester Stallone watched the determined Wepner and was inspired. Stallone wrote a script and got Hollywood producers to take a chance on something that has become one of the most iconic films in history: Rocky. Learn about Ohio's unique role in this piece of history.

Coming tonight....

The entire army of the American Revolution died before John Gray. The veteran from Noble County was the last of an era when he passed away in 1868 at the age of 104. We tell the story of a simple, hardworking farmer who played a role in the creation of our country and earned a unique distinction for that effort.

Beacon Journal reporter Stephanie Warsmith and I have been working on a whole new batch of UNRESOLVED episodes this week! So tonight, Steve will be putting up for you a replay of our two-part Donner Party saga - both parts combined into one episode. It's the fascinating tale of the pioneers made famous when they became stranded on a snow-covered mountain and turned to cannibalism to stay alive. Some of the most prominent people in this story were from Ohio!

Check it out. We'll be back next Sunday with a new story - and of course, check in with Dan for a new OM Backroads story every Wednesday!
