Heads Up -

Parts of Tasmania's north-west coast have been hit with hail within the last hour, after storms continue to moved across the region.

Cars in Burnie have been reported sliding on the road due to the amount of the hail, while lightning strikes continue to cut power to hundreds of properties in the areas.

A low pressure system is expected to continue moving across the state, causing thunderstorms in the north-west, central and western regions.

A 40-year-old southern Tasmanian man has been charged with drug trafficking after he was allegedly found with 28 grams of ice at Hobart airport.

Police say the man, from Molesworth, North West of Hobart, arrived at Hobart on a flight from Melbourne on Saturday night.

Sergeant Greg Rogers said he was searched by members of Taskforce Saturate after disembarking.

Tasmania Police will allege they located 28 grams of methylamphetamine (ice) concealed on him and also within toys including Lego that were packed in his luggage," Sergeant Rogers said.

"Police will further allege the man was also wanted for three outstanding fail to appear warrants," he said.

The man appeared in an out-of-hours court session on Sunday and was remanded in custody to appear at a later date.

Sergeant Rogers said the drugs seized had the potential to cause "significant harm" in the community.

"The methylamphetamine seized could have resulted in 280 individual street deals," he said.

"Tasmania Police will continue to target offenders who attempt to import illicit substances into Tasmania by conducting both targeted and random screening of persons entering the state by sea and air.

Fires at Quoiba, Stony Rise believed to be deliberately lit -

Two separate fires in the state’s North-West are under investigation with police believing they were likely deliberately lit. The latest.

June 25, 2024 -

Two fires believed to be deliberately lit are currently under investigation:

Devonport fire crews were called out to two separate fires overnight that police believe were likely deliberately lit.

The first occurred around 11.30pm, with emergency services unable to prevent significant damage to a vacant building on Devonport Road at Quoiba.

Later at around 1.05am, firefighters were once again called upon to extinguish a blaze with a vehicle fire at a car repair business on Stony Rise Road.

Police report the fire spread to two other vehicles in the yard before being extinguished.

Officers say the cause of the fires are under investigation and are being treated as suspicious.

Police would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the fires or anyone acting suspiciously in the areas around those times.

‘Daddy is going to kill you’: Sadistic Tasmanian man blocked from trying to find children -

CONTENT WARNING ⚠️:

June 14, 2024

A Tasmanian woman has fled the state with her children after they suffered years of unspeakably cruel and sadistic violence at the hands of her own husband.

A sadistic Tasmanian man who unleashed unspeakably cruel and often sexual violence upon his wife, children and pets – which he defended through bizarre beliefs – has been legally restrained from the family.

The mother, following a parenting and property settlement dispute that aired unusually shocking allegations in the Federal Circuit and Family Court, has also been granted permission to change the names of her four children so they can’t be found.

The woman – who has since fled Tasmania with her children – said her husband would assault her in instances where she had not cooked his “eggs to his liking” or washed his potatoes correctly.

She said he controlled water use in the house, disallowed her from going out alone other than to buy groceries, r***d her after she gave birth, put poison on their pets’ food, and strangled and bashed their animals.

She said he also bashed their children, showed one videos of a child “being chopped up alive with power tools”, and told her stories of men who r**e their children as revenge if their wives left them.

The children’s grandmother began noticing welts on one of the children, and made an anonymous report to Child Safety Services.

The allegations also revealed claims of serious sexual and sadistic abuse against the children, so bad it's not suitable for publication.

On the day of the couple’s separation in September 2022, one of the children allegedly told their mother: “if we go home, Daddy is going to kill you and hang all us kids”.

One of the children reported their father made their sibling eat their own vomit, while another said he flushed their head down the toilet, and made them eat faeces and drink urine.

Justice Terence McGuire said when police interviewed one of the children, they said their father had tied them up, put a rope around their neck, were smacked with wooden sticks with nails, witnessed their father stabbing animals, and threatened to “skin” their siblings.

The wife was granted some five family violence orders, restraining orders to protect her and her children, between 2022 and 2024.

But despite the orders, she said the husband continued to stalk and threaten to kill the family.

The wife said the current order would expire next year, and that her family needed court-imposed protection.

Justice McGuire noted the man did not accept the jurisdiction of the court and did not participate in the trial, but had stood up in the public gallery earlier this year and proclaimed himself a sovereign citizen, and that the children were his “flesh and blood heirs and successors”.

“They are our life energy, our property and a rightful place of my bloodlines flowing perpetuity. We maintain our inherent rights as the executor for my flesh and blood’s estates, until they come of age,” he said.

Her husband also told her, “Women should not speak in public as they will embarrass themselves … a woman should just listen to what the man is saying”, and also telling her: “you will submit to me”.

She said he would often quote scripture, speak of exorcism and “casting demons” and became particularly controlling during the Covid pandemic, saying “everyone is evil”.

The woman said she and her children were deprived of medical care, including her pregnancy care.

After hearing corroborating evidence from witnesses and experts, Justice McGuire said he accepted the woman’s claims as true and that the husband posed an unacceptable risk of harm to the family.

Bo Robert Popowski refused bail in the Burnie Magistrates Court ahead of plea date:

A North-West man accused of killing a four-year-old in Smithton will spend time behind bars ahead of an expected plea date.

A 35-year-old dairy farmer from the tiny town of Togari in Circular Head is accused of causing the death of a four-year-old child has been refused bail.

"Bo Robert Popowski " has been charged with one count of manslaughter and another count of ill-treatment of a child following the death of baby James David Chad Ryan.

Police will allege that Mr Popowski assaulted the boy by stomping on his abdomen on May 18.

Police said they were notified of the death on March 31 after being informed by hospital staff before laying charges nine days later.

On Wednesday, Magistrate Katie Edwards told Mr Popowski, who appeared via video link from custody, that she would not grant him bail.

He has not yet entered a plea to either of the charges but is expected to do so in the Burnie Magistrates Court on July 4.

High speed police chase ends after teens crash stolen car in the state's South -

Two teenage boys have been charged over an incident in Southern Tasmania early on Wednesday morning that police allege involved a stolen car and high-speed chase.

The incident began around 3:30am when the 15-year-old from Clarendon Vale and a 16-year-old from Rokeby reportedly broke into a Bellerive home.

Police allege the pair stole cash and the keys to an expensive vehicle from the home, which they then used to steal the car.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle a short time later in the Bellerive area, but the boys managed to get away.

They were then allegedly clocked speeding at over 200km/h on the Brooker Highway at Granton before crashing the car later in Bridgewater.

One of the boys was arrested yesterday at a Clarendon Vale home, while the other was taken into custody this morning in Rokeby.

Both have been charged with aggravated burglary, stealing, motor vehicle stealing, evade police, driving without a licence, exceeding the speed limit and computer related fraud.

The 15-year-old is scheduled to appear in court at a later date, while the 16-year-old has appeared in court today.

Daniel Gandini siege and family violence trial hears accused allegedly threw acid on police officers

A police officer has described to a court the "excruciating pain" and temporary loss of vision he experienced when acid was allegedly thrown on him and three fellow officers during a siege of a Port Sorell home in 2021.

The officer was a member of the Tasmania Police Special Operations Group (SOG) tasked with attempting to breach the front door of Daniel Victor Gandini's home in July that year for alleged family violence.

Mr Gandini, who refers to himself as Diplomat Dan or simply Dan, is on trial in the Supreme Court in Burnie accused of assaulting his ex-wife and splashing acid on four police officers.

The accused is representing himself in the trial and during opening statements and cross-examination of witnesses he has claimed that he was a victim of domestic violence, and that he was "in the peaceful occupation" of his home on July 8, 2021, when police surrounded it in what he described as a "siege".

The court has heard he locked himself in his house and refused to negotiate with police or come out for 11 hours until officers breached his door with an explosive at 9:45pm that night.

He has claimed his ex-wife orchestrated a bomb hoax, which was why there was such a significant police response to her claims of assault, but she told the jury he had previously said he would blow up the house if police ever attempted to arrest him.

Giving evidence in the trial on Wednesday, a SOG officer said his team had received intelligence that Dan previously had experience working with explosives in the mining industry.

He told the jury that he was at the front of the group of SOG officers holding a ballistics shield when the door was breached.

"The accused has popped into the doorway wearing goggles and holding what looks like a cut open milk container and thrown a liquid at us," the officer said.

He explained to the jury that the liquid had a yellow tinge and he initially thought it was fuel.

He said the liquid went all over the shield and his helmet, clothing and face covering.

"As it went on to my face, I could immediately feel burning and the vision in my right eye was severely impacted," he told the jury.

He said the SOG officers had concerns about possibly being covered in a flammable liquid, and that he retreated and washed himself off with a neighbour's garden hose.

The jury was told Dan then exited the house and began verbally abusing officers and advancing on them "aggressively" before being shot with beanbag rounds fired from a shotgun, and then arrested.

Another officer referred to the bean bags as "less lethal munitions", and the jury was shown photos of the subsequent bruising to Dan's body.

The SOG officer said he noticed after the arrest that his clothing had begun to melt and disintegrate where the liquid had been splashed on it and told paramedics that some had gone in his eye.

I felt excruciating pain and there was some burning sensation on my forehead and nose," he said.

He said he was taken to the Mersey Community Hospital for further treatment.

The accused has claimed the trial is a "vexatious and malicious" prosecution and that on that day police were attempting to cause him "grievous bodily harm" and "murder" him.

In cross examination of several police officers so far, the accused has suggested they were acting on false information, and in one instance described his ex-wife's demeanour as "hysterical".

She previously told the jury she had endured "years of abuse" when she fled the house with their children that morning before calling police.

The trial before Chief Justice Alan Blow will hear from all police officers in attendance on the day and is expected to conclude next week.

Tasmania Police -

Two men have been charged with drug manufacturing, trafficking and fi****ms offences after police seized two pill presses, as well as quantities of M**A, ice, and prescription medication during two targeted searches in March and May this year.

Deloraine Uniform officers executed a search warrant at an address in Moltema about 3pm on 12 March, after cannabis plants were located on the property.

During the subsequent search of the residence, police located a significant quantity of unknown substances.

Members of Northern Drugs and Fi****ms Unit were called to the residence and seized quantities of illicit substances, precursors, two electric pill presses, a loaded firearm and silencer, and quantities of ammunition.

A 29-year-old man from the Deloraine area was arrested at the scene and charged with multiple offences including manufacturing a controlled drug for sale, trafficking, and drug possession.

Following extensive ongoing investigation, a Kings Meadows property was searched by members of Northern Drugs and Fi****ms Unit on 29 May.

During that search police seized small quantities of drugs, a silencer, and cash believed to be the proceeds of crime.

As a result of that search, a 32-year-old Launceston man was charged with multiple offences including trafficking and manufacturing a controlled drug for sale.

Both men have since appeared in the Launceston Magistrates Court.

"Kerry Whiting" faces court over alleged murder of ex-partner's boyfriend in Tasmania in 2021 -

*WARNING: This story contains details of an alleged murder and family violence.

The daughter of a northern Tasmanian man accused of murdering his ex-partner's new boyfriend has told a Supreme Court jury he threatened to "kill him" in the weeks leading up to the incident.

Kerry Lee Whiting has pleaded not guilty to allegedly murdering Adrian Paul Mayne and attempting to kill Natalie Joyce Harris on the night of November 25, 2021, in their Ravenswood home.

Mr Whiting appeared in the Launceston Supreme Court before Justice Tamara Jago today for the fourth day of the trial.

The jury heard evidence from the son of Ms Harris and Mr Whiting. The witness was 16 at the time of the incident and at home with his younger sister.

During a police interview that was played to the jury, the teenager said he had been woken by fighting and yelling between Mr Mayne, Ms Harris and a third person.

He said he saw a person stab his mother in the neck numerous times with a knife but did not see them stab Mr Mayne.

It was while the teenager tried to apprehend the assailant that he "looked me dead in the face and I saw that it was my father."

There was blood pouring everywhere, and before mum collapsed on the ground, she said 'it's your dad'," he recounted to police.

She was on her side, trying to crawl away. He was kneeling beside her, just stabbing. I'd never seen anything that gory before, it was quite scary.

The jury also heard the 000 call made on the night of the incident.

During the call, the teenager told the operator his stepfather was unconscious on the floor and covered in blood. He was then instructed to perform CPR.

The teenager told police his father could be "violent" and "aggressive at times".

The teenager told the court that prior to the incident, he had received a call from his father asking him about Ms Harris's new relationship.

He threatened he was going to do something, but never said what," he said.

I was scared, I was shaking before I went to work that day".

The teenage daughter of Ms Harris and Mr Whiting told the court that in the weeks leading up to the incident, her father became more threatening when he learned Ms Harris had a new partner.

He was so mad he said he was going to hurt Adrian," she said. "He said he was going to kill him."

In Natalie Harris's pre-recorded evidence, she said her relationship with Mr Whiting lasted around two decades, before ending in July 2021.

Following the couple's split, Ms Harris told the court she had become romantically involved with Adrian Mayne, who she met over Facebook.

It seemed like the relationship ended on ok terms she said.

Ms Harris described her relationship with Mr Whiting as abusive and violent, and that he would yell and scream if things didn't go his way.

Kerry told me if I cheated on him, he'd make sure that he'd get even with me and that person.

Ms Harris told the court that although Mr Whiting seemed fine when she and the children moved out of their shared house, this later changed.

He started coming all the time and staying until the kids were asleep and telling me why I needed to go back, she said.

I told him not to contact me or I'd call the police. He told me if I called the police he'd put me down.

The trial is continuing.

Amali De Jonge intentionally drove into her sister's partner, resulting in his leg being amputated, court hears -

Amali De Jonge, 19, has pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm after driving into Brent Cruse, 24, in Cressy, northern Tasmania, in November last year.

A victim impact statement from Mr Cruse was read out by the prosecutor during Friday's hearing at the Launceston Supreme Court.

"My life changed when I was hit by Amali De Jonge with her car," he wrote.

"When I looked down, I saw my foot was completely crushed.

While lying on the grass waiting for the ambulance I thought I was going to die."

He said the loss of his leg would impact him financially, as he was working as a labourer before the crash.

He can also no longer use his car, as it had manual transmission, and would now rely on Centrelink payments.

"I was a very active person before this happened to me," he also wrote.

"It's been very challenging and it's going to be a long journey."

The court heard De Jonge had been close to her sister before the crash.

Defence lawyer Lucy Flanagan said in the lead-up to the incident, De Jonge's sister had complained to De Jonge about an argument where her partner had been "aggressive".

However Ms Flanagan said there was no accusations of abuse.

The court heard De Jonge confronted Mr Cruse at the time about the alleged mistreatment of her sister.

The prosecutor said there was also an incident where the tail light of Mr Cruse's car had been smashed.

Ms Flanagan said these events led to Mr Cruse's brother sending "a serious of aggressive snapchats" to De Jonge's partner.

She said De Jonge was aware of the messages, and so when she saw Mr Cruse and his brother driving in Cressy she made a "panicked" decision to follow them.

"She was of the belief they were going to her partner's house to cause some harm," Ms Flanagan said.

The prosecutor read a statement from Mr Cruse's brother, where he said they went to De Jonge's boyfriend's house to ask for his thoughts on how to resolve the conflict.

The brother's statement said De Jonge sped towards them, and when they opened their car doors to get out of the vehicle, she drove "straight into Brent".

Ms Flanagan said when police asked De Jonge how the crash happened, she readily admitted she was responsible.

Ms Flanagan also said De Jonge's friend was responsible for the smashing of the tail light, although De Jonge was present at the time and did not intervene.

Ms Flanagan asked Magistrate Tamara Jago to take into account De Jonge's circumstances at the time of the incident, including the relationship between her and Mr Cruse.

"You have before you an extremely young person with essentially no criminal history except for a traffic infringement," she argued.

"She has accepted responsibility from the first moment she was given to do so.

She said De Jonge was 18 at the time and genuinely remorseful.

The judge was provided a character reference letter from De Jonge's employer, who is also her landlord.

Several of De Jonge's family members, including her parents, were present for the hearing on Friday.

Justice Tamara Jago said she accepted the early plea, the impact on the family and De Jonge's young age, but was not convinced the relationship between the pair mattered.

"It's about as reckless as I can imagine," Justice Jago said.

"She drove a motor vehicle into her brother-in-law because she overreacted."

Justice Jago said she would consider a request from Ms Flanagan for home detention as opposed to a prison sentence.

"I honestly don't know what I'm going to do in respect to this matter yet," Justice Jago said.

She said it was "probably more serious" than home detention, and there was "a very reasonable prospect" De Jonge would spend time in prison.

The matter has been adjourned until July.

Man categorised as 'high-risk offender' pleads not guilty to threatening to murder two women in Tasmania -

Nathan Michael Green 38 has pleaded not guilty to threatening to kill two women in Tasmania, but has pleaded guilty to separate breachs of bail charges, telling a judge to give him as much jail time as you can give me.

Green is the subject of a court-imposed "high-risk offender order", which gives police greater powers to monitor people deemed a risk to the community.

Earlier this year, Green was charged with two counts of making "written threats to murder" while he was in the Hobart suburb of Risdon Vale in June and November last year.

His initial application for bail was rejected by the Hobart Magistrates Court, but after appealing against that decision in the Supreme Court, he was granted bail on April 23.

Court documents show that on April 29 and April 30, Green allegedly then breached the strict conditions he was subject to.

According to the particulars of the charge sheet, he allegedly "invited and encouraged" an unnamed person to enter the boundary of a Hobart property where he was staying, which was not permitted under the conditions.

One day later, he allegedly left the property without the approval of a probation officer, which was also contrary to the conditions.

He was subsequently charged with two counts of breaching the high-risk offender order, two counts of breaching the bail conditions, and one count of contravening the conditions of a notice.

On Wednesday, Green appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court via video link from Risdon Prison, representing himself.

When asked by court staff to confirm he was indeed Nathan Michael Green, he told the court: "Of course I am, you f***-wit".

Magistrate Chris Webster then read out the complaint, telling the court Green had been accused of wilfully trying to intimidate two women when he allegedly wrote threats to murder them.

When asked how he intended to plead, Green said: "Not guilty."

The threat-to-kill charges will be dealt with in the Supreme Court on August 6.

Separately, Green pleaded guilty to breaching the conditions he was subject to while on bail.

"I got out of jail [and] I didn't like [it]," Green told the magistrate. I would rather be in jail.

"I want as much jail time as you can give me … I don't give a f***, mate."

The breach offences will be dealt with in the Hobart Magistrates Court on July 8.

At his last court appearance in May, Green's Legal Aid lawyer withdrew their services.

Today, Magistrate Webster told him: "If you want to get a lawyer, I suggest you get one."

Green was remanded in custody pending his next court appearances in both the Hobart Magistrates Court and the Supreme Court.
