On the evening of January 24, 2025 at 6:52 PM the Chattooga County Coroner's Office was notified by Chattooga County 911 of a multi vehicle motor vehicle accident with a possible fatality in the 2000 block of Highway 114.
Coroner Jeremy McElhaney responded to the scene and initiated his investigation and learned that the victim had been transported to Chattooga ER where he was pronounced dead by the ER physician.
The name is not being released at this time, pending further notification of the family.
Several units from the Summerville Fire Department, Lyerly Fire Department, and Atrium Floyd EMS responded to the scene to care for several others injured in the accident.
The Chattooga County Coroner's Office, Georgia State Patrol, Chattooga County Sheriff's Department are investigating the crash.

Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton reminds residents Homestead exemption applications can be made during the year of residency or by April 1 the next year. Various homestead exemptions exist, including Regular Homestead, Double Homestead for age 65, Floating Homestead for age 62, and others for disabled veterans and surviving spouses. Some exemptions have income requirements. All applications must be submitted to the Assessor’s Office between January 1 and April 1, and an affidavit signature is required.

Temperatures are rising to normal January levels with some light showers expected. Mild conditions will see highs from the mid-40s to near 60 by Sunday, while nighttime lows stay below freezing. Moisture will increase, especially in Northwest Georgia, with light rain possible. Wintry weather chances are low. From Sunday night through Friday, cooler rain is predicted, especially on Sunday and Monday, with some snowy mix in the mountains. Midweek temperatures could reach the 60s and 70s, with rain chances increasing but uncertain rainfall amounts. Overall, temperatures will gradually warm through the week.

UPDATE ON HIGHWAY 114 ACCIDENT - 8:35 PM : Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader says that law enforcement and emergency workers are still working a five-vehicle crash with injuries on Highway 114 (the Lyerly Highway). Highway 114 is closed at Ellenburg Subdivision and at Norton Road headed east and will remain closed for a period of time.

Engine 12-R responded to the area of Mahan Road in Summerville on automatic mutual aid with Engine 9 and 4 to reports of a residential structure fire. Firefighters promptly extinguished a fully involved mobile home and a camper exhibiting smoke and flames upon arrival. One individual was transported by Artium Health Floyd EMS for evaluation of potential smoke inhalation. Traffic was delayed in the area due to a live power line down. Please send prayers for all involved.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) confirmed that a hunter-harvested white-tailed deer tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Lanier County in November 2024. A 5-mile CWD Management Area will be established around the infection site to control the disease and gather more data. The DNR will continue monitoring and sampling in the area. Despite the CWD confirmation, DNR officials assure that deer hunting in Georgia will continue and encourage public awareness and participation in efforts to prevent the disease's spread.

The Trion Town Council held its January meeting on Tuesday instead of the usual Thursday. They discussed paving projects partially funded by a $36,000 grant. The council approved an agreement for the Trion Police Department to maintain membership in the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force, a SPLOST referendum, and qualifying fees for upcoming elections. A citizen complained about the Trion Fire Department’s alleged unprofessional behavior during a call. Mayor Lanny Thomas stated they are investigating the complaint.
