Harry Potter through a humorous, yet ruthless lens: two q***r IRL witches dig deep into the books they love.
The Gayly Prophet is the intersectional, q***r Harry Potter podcast of your dreams. How do we know? Because it is the q***r, intersectional Harry Potter podcast of our dreams. Hosts Jessie Blount (she/her) and Lark Malakai Grey (he/him) are two q***r nerds who love talking about Harry Potter and making each other laugh, and The Gayly Prophet is a place where we get to share that with the world.
When we started this project we honestly had very little planned. The newspaper format is a lifesaver for our ADHD brains, and it only exists because our brilliant comic artist and resident punmaster, Theo Julien Forrester, came to the rescue days before we had our first recording scheduled. He received a somewhat panicked text from Lark, beseeching him to come up with a gay pun title for a Harry Potter podcast and came back with both The Gayly Prophet and the Queerbler in record time. (The Queerbler also exists as one of our patreon exclusives. How could we not use that name?!) So if you’ve ever wondered which came first, the structure or the title, now you know.
There are lots of Harry Potter podcasts out there for folks to choose from, and we knew that. The thing is, there weren’t any Harry Potter podcasts doing what we really wanted to hear--namely, critical analysis from an intersectional lens--and we honestly are pretty uniquely equipped to do that work. Jessie is a q***r black woman, Lark is a disabled trans person, both of us have serious mental illnesses. We also both love yelling about injustice (Hello, we are both Gryffindors), and love the use of accessible frameworks to talk about big issues. So we launched ourselves into the sea of Harry Potter podcasts with the hopes that other folks shared our passions, and are overjoyed to be building an amazing community of q***rs and nerds.
One of our iTunes reviews summed up what we are doing so beautifully that it made us both cry when we read it, and so we will leave you with these words: “if you want to q***r the way you engage with the witchy world of HP, challenge the systemic problems in that world as well as our own, have your heart torn in two by seeing the beauty in the what-ifs, and laugh so hard it hurts, I urge you to give this podcast a listen!”
