My anime origin story starts with Sci-Fi Channel back in the summers of 1997/1998 when they showed Anime Week during the summer hosted by Apollo Smile.

Before that, I was only exposed to DBZ, Sailor Moon, Macross, and Voltron.

I was up late one summer evening and channel surfing and Apollo Smile pops up. The first anime movie she presented was Galaxy Express 999 by Leiji Matsumoto. I was in awe because I was under the impression that anime was just for kids, but GE999 had an actual deep plot (for a pre-teen), and it opened the world to anime movies to me.

If it wasn't for that, I would never have found out about Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, Grave of the Fireflies, etc.
He is known for his other works; Space Battleship Yamato and Interstella 5555 for Daft Punk's album Discovery.

Leiji Matsumoto passed away last week.
