When newspaper columnist Barbara Stanwyck publishes a bogus suicide note signed John Doe, the paper must supply one in the flesh. Enter Gary Cooper. As circulation skyrockets, the paper’s owner, sees the potential in John Doe as the happy face delivering his authoritarian message.
