When it comes to life experiences, some of us may think we have a PhD in living a drama-free or low-key life but the relationships we form will surely test that.

I hope you found this article helpful. We learn everyday and different methods work on different individuals.

If you could add another technique for resolving conflicts, or even your most preferred one, please share it in the comments. I'd love to hear from you!

There's something about reading memoirs that makes you even more drawn to the personality; like you’re having a conversation with that incredible person.

Though I could not identify with Issa Rae’s experiences, I liked that it wasn't your typical black girl and trauma story; that she was blessed with some level of privileges.

Some lines were quite relatable, and I knew I had to share 😌

Alright, hear me out! I believe relationships often thrive on shared values and similarities rather than stark differences.

All those fire and ice shenanigans are real sexy but it doesn't seem practical in reality.

I mean no, because real-life connections are actually more nuanced and complex than the cliches we know!

Book: The Death of Vivek Oji
Author: Akwaeke Emezi

The truth remains that some people have this weird reflex to softness. They see it as a threat, as a weakness to exploit, rather than a strength to admire.

In a world where we're met with different battles — leaving behind scars that toughen our skin; softies are ironically, the strong ones.

I mean, they are the best kind of people. Kind, trusting, sweet and gentle.

So try to be that person who protects softness, rather than trample on it. And if you're already one, oof let's be friends, you're my kind of person! ☺️

THOUGHTS: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

You know that one ex you part with on good terms but you still get goosebumps every time you hear his name; just me? Okay! Well, that's how it feels every time I come across The Song of Achilles.

It's been exactly two years since I read this one, and at first, I wasn't completely sold on it, it felt like a drag, but once I turned the final page, I just couldn't stop thinking about it. I spent hours reading reviews, even scouring YouTube for clips of my beloved Achilles and Patroclus. Forreal I couldn't satisfy my imagination, I needed to see them, to visualize their incredible story.

I remember calling a friend to give her a full narration of the book I had just completed 'cause I was so overcome with excitement and emotion. It was then that I realised, maybe I really was in love with this book.

Of course, some parts kinda bored me. I mean, I wasn't too familiar with Greek mythology and their complex characters and at one time, I thought of dropping the novel altogether. But something kept pulling me in, and I just had to know how it would all end. Reader, let me tell you, this one would linger in your mind for decades to come. It completely captured my heart (lol I sound just like Jane Eyre).

This baby was, in one word, captivating. I couldn't put it down. It was maddening trying to figure out how Vivek died, but even that wasn't the focal point of the novel. It was us sharing in his struggles. He seemed so delicate, he could snap in two at any slight mishandling.

Vivek's death left a lasting sting. Advancing further into the story, I had made up plausible scenarios for how he might've died. Was he lynched? Did he experience a slow and painful death? Oh, my poor Vivek!

The revelation of his death left me blank. I didn't know how to feel...because it was ordinary –a senseless accident that snatched him from life. A death unrelated to his struggles.

Even though we never really got to hear from Vivek, we only knew him through the eyes of others, his essence shone through the vivid portrayals of those who loved him.

The author touched on mental health, a topic often ignored in Nigeria. Tell a Nigerian parent you're depressed and they're more likely to respond with "You are not depressed in Jesus' name." It's never met with the same level of understanding you had hoped for. Depression? More like 'demon possession.' This is also reflected in the way Vivek's parents responded to their son's state of mind till it became unmanageable.

A big thumbs-up to Akwaeke Emezi for this work of art. The way it ignited emotions within me is what a powerful book is meant to do. I know I'm late to the party, but I am excited to read other works from her…actually everything, and her newest release, Little Rot, is at the top of that list.

What do you call a story that is tragic and happy at the same time? Umm…”tragi-comedy” is too absurd in the context but “bittersweet" still doesn't seem to fit right.

The inspiration behind this book warmed my heart. A collection of 12 stories “written under the influence” of songs; with each song serving as a catalyst for the story.

Chimeka Garricks is an excellent storyteller! I adore the way he was able to tell stories about different flawed personalities in a way that didn't feel like fiction.

It felt like I was listening to the story of a neighbour, a coworker, or a friend. That's how real and immersive it was.

𝑴𝒚 𝑻𝒐𝒑 5 𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔:

🌻 Lost Stars: OMG! The first story was gut-wrenching; like why did you do that to me? I just got here!

🌻 River: This one left me with feelings of melancholy. The bromance between two friends who joined a confraternity.

🌻 I Put a Spell on You: It probably wasn't intended but I laughed my head off reading this one; I mean it felt so absurd yet so real.

🌻 Desperado: A crazy connection between ex-couples. Like honestly, some people just can't be helped. I shook my head a thousand times at the persona of the male lead.

🌻 You Suppose Know: Okay, I was certain Lost Stars would stay my favourite, but the last story was like, “You sure?” Love is such a beautiful thing, no matter how people try to downplay it, and that's what this story showed.
An immaculate ending to an amazing book!
