After 7 years on YouTube, I just crossed the 10 million view mark! Did it make me rich? No. But did it make me a better person? Also no! 😂

I’m still incredibly grateful for the journey, the people I’ve met, and the things I’ve been able to experience. All of which would’ve never happened, if I were still at a job I didn’t love. What an awesome ride!

ROUND BARN (LaPorte, Indiana)
Once common across Indiana, round / octagonal barns are now somewhat of a rarity. There were once 624 in the state, 453 still exist in various conditions, some of them threatened by decay. President George Washington even had one built in 1793.

Mount Baldy (Michigan City, IN)
A big sand dune with memories. When I was a kid, Dad drove us from Greenwood, Indiana to Mount Baldy. The fun was in climbing this very shifty sand, to get to the top and see the Lake Michigan beach. It was not easy, slip and slide, all the way to the top! But my big mistake was deciding to slide down. Sand got in parts of my shorts I never dreamed possible! Believe me, that three hour ride home, reminded me of my bad choices.

In 2013, a six year old boy climbed Mount Baldy, and fell into a sinkhole. He was immediately covered by 11 feet of sand. Fortunately, he was reached by heavy equipment, making a full recovery. Today, climbing Mount Baldy is off-limits.

International Circus Hall of Fame (Peru, Indiana). Located out in the country, along the Mississinewaw River, it provides a rare glimpse into circus life. There are many beautiful carriages, costumes, and artifacts, from a bygone era.

The Indiana dunes pavilion has an interesting story. Built in 1929, its stands on the site of a ghost town, once named “City West”. The town had a sawmill and about 20 houses. These were abandoned, and either torn down or buried by the constantly shifting sand.

In the state of Indiana, only three museums contain mummies from Egypt. Two of those museums are at Richmond! This one is at the Wayne County Museum, which contains a surprisingly large collection of artifacts, from both Indiana, and the world.

Frozen in time: the Studebaker National Museum, at South Bend, Indiana. I was getting ready to leave, when I looked at the site map. There was an entire basement display, with so many cars they were stacked three high in bins!

What in the nightmare fuel is this?! This is a Diabloceratops skull, located at the Indiana Dinosaur Museum (SOUTHBEND, INDIANA). “Diablo” is Spanish for “devil”, and this definitely has a scary vibe.

Wabash and Erie Canal (Delphi, Indiana)
A wonderful trip back in time, reminding me of when Metamora had their canal boat. To describe the experience: the journey takes travelers passed historic buildings and three bridges, coasting leisurely and quietly. As you look over the boat, the limestone gives the clear water a greenish tint, though you can see to the bottom (about 4 feet). Geese, and re-enactors in 1800’s attire, are seen along the waterfront, making it a special, 40 minute voyage. Nearby is a museum, village, and a canal boat that kids can play in!

WHERE STORIES BEGIN
People often ask where my stories come from. My parents provided history and legends, starting at a young age, and many kind people have provided leads during my travels. But the county libraries, and historical societies, are where it truly gets interesting. They are absolute treasure troves of information, with documents recorded back when things actually happened, without the lens of modern revisionism. During online research, I’ve noticed a pervasive sanitizing of history. I’m not sure if the history never made it online in the first place, or someone in modern times removed it, as it seemed too outlandish. IE, “We don’t want outsiders thinking we’re crazy: DELETE.”

My current project in northern Indiana, is uncovering many unusual things, items that have likely never seen the outside of a file folder.
