A RETURN TO ANGEL MOUNDS INTERPRETIVE CENTER (23 November 2024)

Over the last few years, I’ve made a pilgrimage to numerous mound builder sites and museums. About two years ago, the Angel Mounds site museum was closed for renovation, along with Cahokia and the Glenn Black museum. There wasn’t a huge amount of artifacts to begin with, at Angel Mounds, out of 2.5 million collected during Dr. Black’s study. However, the displays were well done and insightful. I looked forward to what they would present, when they re-opened, and returned today. I have never had a museum make me angry, but this one did.

All of the artifacts, and all of the interpretive displays are gone, replaced with posters telling a politically motivated narrative. Out of all the decades of Dr. Black’s work, nothing is left. NOTHING. In its place is a historically inaccurate lie, portraying Shawnee and Miami tribes as the mound builders. In the 1700s, these are the same tribes that said they found these ancient cities, they didn’t build them. There’s also no DNA evidence, similar artifacts, or even a knowledge of astronomy, shared with these tribes. This is the repatriation act of 1990, erasing history. Unless you want to tour the grounds, the museum is a waste of $12.

Relics of a Lost World

Across the midwest is an ancient mystery, a landscape filled with unusual structures and artifacts, from thousands of years ago. Mounds of dirt that look like snakes, some that predict the seasons. Caves that might have prehistoric carvings, challenging what we read in history books. Who exactly were these not so primitive people?

Come along for an epic adventure, as we travel through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Kentucky, exploring forgotten ancient cities, hiking through forests, and viewing the artifacts left behind!

HINDOSTAN FALLS (Martin County)

A long but short fall along the White River. There’s an old legend that Indians hid gold underneath the Falls, in small cutouts. While the river has went nearly dry in some years, no one has found the gold.

What was found in the 1800s, was a huge burial mound above the falls. Looters found many artifacts, including human remains. However, by coincidence, or by unburying people that died of disease, villagers became very ill thereafter. In fact, the town was decimated by an unknown deadly illness, killing a large proportion of the population. Those that could, left the town to escape certain death, calling it, “an Indian curse”, caused by digging up sacred ground.

I guarantee, that no one has ever seen all these things in one video, if ever before in their lifetime. I can hardly wait to share this one! Hopefully this one will be out there in the next week.

With directions from a fellow explorer, I achieved a bucket list item: seeing the FOURTH natural arch in Indiana. While fairly common, in the Daniel Boone National Forest of Kentucky, these are quite rare in Indiana. Hidden in the Hoosier National Forest, I only heard about this one about six months ago. This absolutely made my day! 🙂

After 7 years on YouTube, I just crossed the 10 million view mark! Did it make me rich? No. But did it make me a better person? Also no! 😂

I’m still incredibly grateful for the journey, the people I’ve met, and the things I’ve been able to experience. All of which would’ve never happened, if I were still at a job I didn’t love. What an awesome ride!

ROUND BARN (LaPorte, Indiana)
Once common across Indiana, round / octagonal barns are now somewhat of a rarity. There were once 624 in the state, 453 still exist in various conditions, some of them threatened by decay. President George Washington even had one built in 1793.

Mount Baldy (Michigan City, IN)
A big sand dune with memories. When I was a kid, Dad drove us from Greenwood, Indiana to Mount Baldy. The fun was in climbing this very shifty sand, to get to the top and see the Lake Michigan beach. It was not easy, slip and slide, all the way to the top! But my big mistake was deciding to slide down. Sand got in parts of my shorts I never dreamed possible! Believe me, that three hour ride home, reminded me of my bad choices.

In 2013, a six year old boy climbed Mount Baldy, and fell into a sinkhole. He was immediately covered by 11 feet of sand. Fortunately, he was reached by heavy equipment, making a full recovery. Today, climbing Mount Baldy is off-limits.
