Last Saturday, the Carolina Raptor Center gave our “laughing kookaburra” the best in show award at a photo contest that was part of their annual gala and auction . This bird was taken not in Australia ( the kookaburra’s normal habitat) but at one of the Center’s Photo Wild events. At these educational events, held in the spring and fall, photographers have the opportunity to learn about the birds — and even snap them on the wing. One of us — we can’t remember who!- was lucky enough to snag this guy with wings up.

Baseball season ended yesterday for the Charlotte Knights, a farm team for the Chicago White Sox. Over the summer we went to four games, including one where we enjoyed a view from the Wells Fargo box. All great fun! Here's some snaps to preserve the memories. (P.S. rolling down the hill behind the outfield is great fun for kids.)

MOOSE, WY— The public is invited to join park rangers on an early-morning tour to observe strutting sage grouse perform their annual mating dance near Mormon Row.

Grouse strut programs are a unique opportunity to witness greater sage grouse congregate where the males perform animated mating displays during the spring breeding season. As part of the ritualistic strut, in open areas called “leks,” males use their tail feathers and expandable air sacs under their throats to compete with other males for an optimum position on the lek and to gain the attention of females. During the tour, rangers will provide information about sage grouse and conservation efforts underway for populations that are declining throughout much of the American West.

Ranger-led grouse strut programs will be offered free of charge, by reservation only, Saturday, April 22, Sunday, April 23, Saturday, April 29, and Sunday, April 30. Participants will meet at the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center in Moose at 5:30 a.m. Participants should bring cameras, binoculars, water, warm layers, and comfortable walking shoes. To reserve your spot and for more information, please call 307-739-3399 (Mon.-Fri., 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. MT).

View from the bow this Wednesday morning in East Greenland. On our way to an area full of icebergs, we are told. First a zodiac cruise then a hike up a hill for an overview. Only one more day here then we sail back to Iceland.

The scene last night on Skólavörðustígur, a street that leads up a hill to Reykjavik’s famous Lutheran church, Hallgrímskirkja, built 1986. The lower half sports the Rainbow Flag. At the bottom of the hill, on Laugavegur street, we discovered a bookshop cm bar, Mal Og Menning, where a book-signing was in process.
Today, in one hour, we embark on Poseidon Expeditions’ Sea Spirit to cross the Denmark Strait toward eastern Greenland. Hoping to see the full moon.

Update to previous post. The US just today removed the COVID testing requirement for those entering from other countries. That’s great. But it means we’ll have to be all the more vigilant on airplanes and in airports. I’ll have on my mask!

Excellent article about how to prepare for a possible quarantine during your travels. Know your destination’s (and airline’s) requirements for proof of recovery and time in isolation and pack useful items—like test kits and blood oxygen monitors—in your suitcase are among the tips here. Oh—and do make sure your insurance covers COVID.

Just returned from a wonderful journey to France—from the historic UNESCO city of Strasbourg in the country’s northeast, then south to the canal-interlaced city of Annecy, the “Venice of the Alps.”. Near Annecy we relaxed in the lovely village of Talloires; and, finally, moved on to the high French Alps, the “rooftop of Europe,” in the region of Chamonix.
Below are a few pix: Strasbourg with St. Paul Church at the end of a tree- lined canal; another Strasbourg canal accented by three ancient towers; Talloires with its church steeple overlooking Lake Annecy; and views of the high mountains. The mountain panoramas near Chamonix are other-worldly, as one might imagine in Heaven (the only other comparable views are in Murren, Switzerland!). The tall, pointed peak pictured is named Les Drus, one we’d not known before but has been famous for a long time among mountaineers as one of the most beautiful and daunting mountains in the world. It became our favorite! At the end are some half-timbered houses in Strasbourg---very typical of the the old architecture in the city. We also include a "fun"spontaneous image from Annecy showing how seriously the French love their mid-afternoon ice cream cones!
But travel to Europe now, especially having to deal with unexpected airline flight cancellations, crowded airports and planes, COVID test requirements, etc. is not pleasant now— and it’s getting worse as the summer season approaches. If anyone’s interested, we can offer some helpful tips having now experienced some nightmare airline scenarios in Geneva and elsewhere. But, the compensation was genuinely enjoying our destinations and we're glad to have made the effort!!!

Good information for those of you planning trips to bear country. Another tip: Cubs and moms are emerging in Yellowstone and the Tetons—so secure your food no matter where you’ve parked. Bears aren’t confined to the parks! https://wgfd.wyo.gov/bear-wise-wyoming?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery

Bears have a highly evolved sense of smell and are strongly attracted to human food, garbage, livestock feed, and game meat.
