Origin Of Turudbe Fulani:

"The Torodbe originated in Futa Toro, a strip of agricultural land along the Senegal River and at the time the state of Takrur, from as early as the 9th to as late as 13th century, later spreading throughout the Fulbe territories."

"They may well have been a distinct group by the fifteenth century, when the Denianke conquered Takrur, creating the Empire of Great Fulo. In 1644 the Zawaya Berber reformer Nasr ad-Din launched a jihad to restore purity of religious observance in the Senegal river valley. He gained support from the Torodbe clerical clan against the traditional leaders of the region and initially saw great success, but Nasr ad-Din was killed in 1674 and by 1677 the movement had been defeated. After this defeat, some of the Torodbe migrated south to Bundu and some continued on to the Fouta Djallon."

Fine men’s festival dance tunic, Wodaabe Fulani people, Niger, circa 1960-1970. Front view. We particularly like the comparatively sparse layout of embroidery on the back. These open sided tunics were worn, together with a leather skirt, by young Wodaabe men with dramatically made up faces at an annual festival. Young women from rival clans would inspect the line of dancers and select the most beautiful performers to pair up with. Hand embroidered with designs named after aspects of nomadic lifestyle, on narrow strip weave indigo dyed cloth woven in Nigeria by Hausa men. These dramatic tunics are becoming increasingly scarce.

Sori stands proud as a Wodaabe Fulani woman. Wodaabe women in the Azawak sometimes become climate refugees, traveling to neighborhing countries looking for work. Sori spent much of the year in Nigeria as a domestic worker to make money to purchase land and construct her home. She is in the process of making bricks to build a wall around her land. Sori is a true innovator and leader in her community, and the first one to build a permanent structure. (2018)
