"I remember the first time we headed out to Dr. Ries', it was... it was like a whole different world. It was... it was an island. In this sea of fear and disdain, bordering on hatred, there was this little island of Dr. Ries and the people that helped them."

it's OK Dr. Ries, I deserve this.
But I said, well nobody derveres this,
and so, we really worked at it without using the word "shame".
Dont' you think?
I think a lot of gay people had their own shame just for being gay."

“One senator really believed the way we were going to deal with AIDS was we were going to take the island in the middle of the Great Salt Lake, Antelope Island, and we were going to turn it into basically a l***r colony. So, you know, we would go the rounds every legislative session on these kinds of conversations. Can we tattoo people with AIDS? Can we lock them on an island? Can we criminalize their behavior? Can we nullify their marriages? It was every year there was something like that.”
– BEN BARR

Ben Barr, former Utah AIDS Foundation Director, recalls the shocking proposal to exile people with AIDS to Antelope Island. Stream "Quiet Heroes" today and discover the courageous individuals who stood up for humanity in the face of adversity and helped shape a more inclusive society. Quiet Heroes is now available on Amazon Prime in Australia, Italy, Mexico, and Spain, and on Vimeo on Demand.

“I counted those deaths for quite a while. And, when it got to be 500 I just couldn’t count anymore. It was too painful. As I look back now, it was a battlefield. And, like the poem says… you’re bloody, but unbowed.”
– MAGGIE SNYDER

Maggie’s quote shows unwavering support to individuals affected by HIV/AIDS during the height of the crisis in Utah. Maggie's compassionate and dedicated work in the face of stigma and discrimination was a central focus of the documentary Quiet Heroes, which now includes streaming on Amazon Prime in Australia, Italy, Mexico, and Spain, and on Vimeo on Demand.

– MAGGIE SNYDER

The quote from Dr. Ries and Maggie Snyder shows their deep compassion and understanding. They both knew that their patients were struggling with shame and guilt and wanted to help them overcome those feelings. It is a reminder that no one deserves to be shamed for their HIV status. HIV is a disease, not a moral failing. And everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their health status. Stream QUIET HEROES now on Amazon Prime and Vimeo On Demand.

"So many of these younger people, that were looking at careers, or they were just beginning to find out what life meant to them, were also finding out that they had a disease. A disease that makes people afraid of them. A disease that makes people put judgements on them. A disease that even their families often didn't want to be near them."

– SISTER LINDA BELLMORE

Quiet Heroes is a powerful documentary that tells the story of Dr. Kristen Ries, the only doctor in Salt Lake City who cared for HIV/AIDS patients during the height of the crisis. “In retrospect you grow up you think what is wrong with me? And, through seeing so many gay people in the office, and everybody telling the same story, it became really clear that this was no mental illness, and people were born that way. And you can’t find that many people that chose to do something that made their life difficult. So I learned that, hey, we're all OK.”

– Dr. KRISTEN RIES

Dr. Kristen Ries was a pioneer in HIV/AIDS care in Salt Lake City, where she faced stigma and blame from the religious community. Ries and Snyder created a safe haven for HIV/AIDS patients who had been abandoned by their families, churches, social circles, politicians, and even other doctors – Stream QUIET HEROES now on Amazon Prime and Vimeo On Demand.

“The other thing you need to understand about HIV in the mid-to-late '80s is that especially in those very early years, of the very early '80s, people died very quickly. And the question was not when people would die, but how much time could you get them.”

They will never take credit. They don't feel like they did anything different. But, to be in the presence of their history is remarkable."
