It was the early 90’s and it was gospel music night at Six Flags Over Texas. That night we were performing with Minister Daryl Coley. The band was Sean McCurleySteve Da Maéstro LewisArthur DyerMark Harper. I may have forgotten someone. We got there late afternoon to set up and sound check. We did the sound check and got some instructions from Daryl. After he heard the band he was very chill and just wanted to have a good time. I am not sure whose idea it was, I think it was Sean or Steve suggested that we grab a bite to eat. So we did. Then one of those same two said, “Hey let’s go ride the Texas Giant! 👀 I said, “We just ate!” The line was actually very short. I had retired totally from roller coasters, because I had been on the fastest biggest roller coasters from Cedar Point & Magic Mountain. But they said, “You have never been on an old wooden one.” I said, “WHAT??” Awe *>% #€¥! So we get in line and I am already regretting this. We get in the carriage, and start to move. That thing was squeaky, clacking, and sounding like it could not hold our weight. I was soooo mad at myself for saying yes. I thought to myself, “I didn’t bring extra underwear!” As soon as we get to the top, I looked down and started praying! That dip was ridiculous. I was soooo glad when it was over.
We get off and I was like NEVER AGAIN and never have I again. It was very close to down beat. We literally walked from the Texas Giant to our positions on stage. The band was hittin and the choir was amazing. In the middle of the set Daryl pauses and speaks to the crowd. He was always giving encouragement and life lessons. Toward the end of one of his examples he said, “He——will——-make——you——clean” and off we went into the Hekiziah Walker song. It was groovin hard! Just another great moment from my journey.
