ARC REVIEW: “Traitors' Promise” by

“For a moment - just a moment - the freedom that fills me is almost enough to take me soaring through the open space. As if my magic might have finally - I plummet.”

Everything I felt while reading the first book in this duology, Traitors’ Creed, was amplified in this one. Honestly, writing a review is difficult because I don’t want to give anything away if you haven’t read book one, or book two. If you haven’t - just do it haha.

The world developed in book one was expanded, sharpened, and uncovered. Luka’s worldview and ideals are challenged, along with those of everyone else in the story - no one is left out. Her story, and the way she navigates through life is inspirational - she’s not perfect, nowhere near, and that’s what makes her relatable. Even the other magical characters have humanity and flaws that make you really feel what they’re going through. As always - Blossom is my favourite, though I feel like I connected even more to everyone else in this one as well.

I really loved these books, and Lauren really has a way with words. I’m so honoured to have had the opportunity to read and review (even if I’m horribly late this time around... I'm so sorry!).

Christmas in paradise with my best friend… what could go wrong?

I spend every Christmas Eve with Mateo Sanz. It’s a decade-long tradition, but this year, his family is spending the holidays in the Dominican Republic. Did I mention it’s a destination wedding? Or that his cousin is marrying his ex-girlfriend? Oh, and I offered to fake date him to avoid the god-awful familial pity that’s no doubt following him straight to the Caribbean?

It should be an easy task, except Mateo is not only confident, charismatic, hot as sin, and the kindest man I’ve ever known. He’s also the best friend I’d never want to risk.

But the only way to convince his family this fake relationship is the real deal is through a whole lot of PDA, and when he begins whispering sweet nothings in my ear or holds my gaze even when there’s nobody around, the lines begin to blur.

One thing I forgot to mention? I, Daisy Zimmerman, have been in love with Mateo for as long as I can remember, even though there is no way he feels the same.
It would ruin more than our friendship if my secret were to slip out, and I’m not ready to lose the most important relationship in my life over a fake dating fiasco.
I only have to survive the week in the tropical paradise without letting my feelings for him be known. It should be easy, especially if we’re never alone. All we have to do is keep our hands, mouths, and hearts to ourselves.

I've been a little absent lately.

Life has gotten the better of me - between everyday work and home stuff, the launch of Shadow Kissed Books and Romantasy in the Red Room, and organising next year's event, my ability and drive to read has completely left me.

If you're waiting for an ARC review from me, I'm so sorry, I will get to it, but it will be delayed. I'm slowly getting back to myself and trying to dedicate some reading time so I'm hoping they won't be too late, but they're definitely not going to be on time at this stage. Again... so sorry!

ARC REVIEW: “Arcana Academy” by Elise Kova

“Break or die. It’s one or the other in Halazar Prison. I refuse to do either.”

I absolutely LOVED this story. It was such an exciting and compelling concept. Using the tarot as the power system isn’t all that new but the way it was utilised, with each card having a unique power - whether that be defensive, offensive, physical, or mental. I also love that the ability to ink cards isn’t just something everyone can do. The whole thing made for such an interesting story I had trouble putting it down!

While Clara was independent and determined to not allow Kaelis to run her life, I did like that wasn’t the defining part of her character. She used him just as much as he used her, and though her own drive for revenge and to find out what had happened to her loved ones had her going against him a lot, she wasn’t silly about it, and was able to recognise when to let him lead and when to go her own way.

The tension between Clara and Kaelis was steamy… I loved it. There was the right amount of banter, and that enemies-to-lovers build up that just hooked me right in my soul.

I NEED more of this now. It was such a great read and I haven’t recovered!

ARC REVIEW: “The Starfire Prophecy” by Chantelle N. Kerr

“Death had always lingered at the edges of my life, watching, waiting.”

All-in-all, I found this story enjoyable. The tropes are some of my favourites… I definitely love me a shadow daddy (and Keres is THAT), and a good enemies-to-lovers story. The characters were great, my particular favourite was Lulu - Sera’s best friend. She was hilarious in her snarkiness and a real breath of fresh air throughout the story. I loved Keres’ banter, he was giddily shmexay and just the right amount of broody. I did have a few troubles with Sera (difficult as she’s the main character) but I’m not a huge fan of FMCs that are so independent that they can’t see sensible routes that mean they hide or let the man fight for them, and characters that are so arrogant (males or females) that they can’t see past things to get a full picture. I know that is very human, I don’t like it in real life either hahaha. It’s minor and it didn’t impact the story as a whole. The action was well-written and heart-pounding, giving me a sense that I was there and experiencing it all. The climax battle was great. It was a great story, and it left me wanting more of the story.
