In order to predict the weather one of the myriad parameters we look at (and by 'we' I mean very fast computers) is how much snow is on the ground. Snow keeps sunlight from heating the ground, heat which gets released from the ground after dark.
This snow depth map is actually the initialized data our high resolution computer model uses. The pre-dawn temperature map shows some of that snowy effect.
