Journey to Crete Day 20: Arrival in Chania. We sailed our floating home (a 44ft sailboat) from Preveza (where we bought the boat) to Crete for a very special wedding. We stopped in so many incredible places along the way—and even adopted a Greek stray cat halfway through our journey. It was a great relief to arrive in Chania and snag a spot in the old town marina (evidently not too difficult in August 😅) just in time to settle in before 300 guests arrived for Leo’s sister’s wedding 🤩

Journey to Crete Day 18 and 19: Agia Galini to Western Crete. Operation get us to the church on time! Sailing with a time deadline is never ideal because let’s face it, not a thing goes according to plan 😅 But because of that, we gave ourselves AMPLE time to sail to Crete and ended up with enough wiggle to make a detour on the south side before the wedding. But as the Koumbaro and bridesmaid, we knew it was time to hoist the sails and get to Chania for party time!

Journey to Crete Day 17: Arrival in Agia Galini. Not gonna lie, I (Megan) definitely choked up on arrival to Agia Galini. We talked about this moment for so long and it was so beautiful to watch it unfold in reality as we sailed the final 50 nautical miles to Leo’s family’s village in the south of Crete. We got to spend time with family and friends for a few days before we had to head out for our next destination… the big fat greek wedding in Chania 💒

We are usually at anchor or med mooring (stern-to), so this was our first time springing off of a dock where we were moored alongside, and boy did we struggle with some unexpected meltemi winds! One of the positives of sailing in Crete is that the marinas on the south side were free, the downside is with meltemi winds you can get stuck in one place for a while (again, at least it’s free while you wait!)

Journey to Crete Day 15: the crossing to Crete. We were really relieved to make it across on the calmer day, even if it meant a rolly few hours with the motor. We would have loved to wait for better conditions to sail the entire journey, but we’re on a time crunch to meet visitors in the south of Crete, so it was a choice between this or a crossing while the winds were in the 30s. As two rookies, we think we made the safer decision for our trip.

Journey to Crete Day 13: Poulithra to Monemvasia, a distance of about 30 nautical miles. With Megan getting more sick, we needed to pump the breaks for a bit here. She received great care from the medical center there and we waited for her and the weather to turn before officially leaving the mainland.
