Until very recently, financial services were notoriously hard and expensive to build. Incumbents and startups alike grappled with extensive regulation, inflexible core systems, complex payment architectures, compliance hurdles, fraud, and more. With the open source movement in fintech, banking has moved from something only traditional banks could offer to something that any company can do. In other words, any company can offer financial services

Financial organizations and even non-financial enterprises are leveraging open source banking software to transform how they worked. Many of these changes can be attributed to growing their organizations, optimizing their profits, enhancing their customer experiences, and creating value for society. Enterprises are increasingly relying on vast open-source communities to build and maintain their products and platforms. It is estimated that 99% of Fortune 500 companies currently use OSS

The financial services landscape will be much more competitive in the coming decade. Startups must start thinking about a long-term strategy to build compelling products and services to face this challenge. Multiyear investments are a challenging prospect in a negative macroeconomic environment, but the next decade’s winners will be those who can invest and improve during a down cycle.

This long-term strategy and taking the time to scope out the timelines, budget and talent needed to build the future state will be incredibly valuable to startups. Companies may find that the costs and talent needs are prohibitive, and firms may be better off focusing on relatively niche areas with a moat to defend against compelling competitor ecosystems. Either way, achieving success in the second decade of fintech will be much harder than it was in the first, and companies must start preparing now

When we think of different industries that have been disrupted around text, around audio, there has been a lot of changes since the 1970s, where there's been success with live transcripts and unique audio filtering technology, but there has not been as much disruption around video.

We start to see collaborations, of course, in design, where Sketch went to Figma online with collaborative design, and we've seen what some video editing, like Frame io and other platforms on that collaboration. But really when we come back to videos and consuming them, the insights are still very 1970s.

Find out more in this HumAIn episode on how AI can revolutionize the way we consume video

"So especially over the next few years, we’re going to see more technology that really leverages these real world constraints, that thinks about the world as 3D, rather than as pixels. So those things get me very excited. I’m also a bit of a film nerd. So I love how all of these can relate to the entertainment industry, and we’ve seen really cool things happening in motion capture and the ability to kind of scan a person in 3D and then render scenes around them" Stephen Miller, Chief Product Officer, Fyusion on the HumAIn Podcast

Using Graphs makes developers able to not only process data in real-time transactional mode, but being able to use those along with something like graph type analytics, and then use that in conjunction with AI and ML technologies to augment data back into your graph in order to provide a better real-time user experience

Any enterprise build or any consumer service build is really about creating a better, faster and easier to use experience for your customers. Those are really the driving forces behind any kind of business initiative. Graphs is one of those technologies

Existing automation technologies are great at automating numeric-driven, rule-based functions with linear workflows, but fail to scale to the front office. As content and business processes become more complex, an entirely different set of capabilities is required. That’s where Knowledge Process Automation comes in.

Using human-centric AI to augment revenue operations, KPA combines a suite of technologies that enables knowledge workers to streamline language-based, decision-driven business processes with complex workflows, without ever losing control of the process.

Think about TikTok for a moment. The success of TikTok is because of these recommender systems that work really well. But if you think about it, the actual difference between TikTok and every other social media is not the algorithm probably, but it's in how the user experience feeds the algorithm.

So, the fact that you have a single video at every point in time and there's nothing else that distracts you is the perfect way to collect the right data about how much you like the video? How much time do you spend on the video?

So, it's kind of a paradox, because the most important thing of the app is the recommender system. But the reason why that works is not because of the tech, but because of how the UX feeds the tech.

Workforce automation is not optional anymore. It is necessary to meet the needs of the consumer, attract, and retain the right talent. Doing this correctly is a win-win. It will deliver a better customer experience, improved operational productivity, and a more satisfied human workforce

The future workforce will indeed look very different. Yes, some work will shift to the digital worker and some work may completely go away for the human worker. However, for any company to succeed in the future they will need to figure out how to make the combined human and digital worker come together to generate effective business outcomes.

This will require both portions of your workforce (human and digital) to be on a continuous improvement path to the point of being almost self-tuning. The only way that can happen is if the combined workforce is truly working side by side learning from and teaching each other

Digital disruption is changing the way media is funded, produced and consumed. Marketers must lean into the digital transformation and be willing to experiment if they want to stay relevant. There is no doubt that with smartphone data consumption on the path to overtaking fixed broadband across much of the globe and mobile adoption rapidly growing in countries where the technology has not yet reached saturation, the future of media marketing is digital. But while some media companies have been exploring how to adapt and leverage the increasingly digital landscape for the better part of a decade, others are still struggling to land that initial leap

26/10/2022

Exposure to misinformation can reduce trust in the media more broadly, making it tougher to know what fact or fiction in the future is. When we start to believe that there is the possibility that anything can be fake, it’s easier to discount what is actually true. This presents a real concern about the impact of fake news on our children and young people

The current disinformation crisis has been years in the making. The advent of the internet made business conditions more difficult for news providers, many of which closed shop. An explosion of partisan websites and the proliferation of social media filled the void, attracting consumers lacking time or inclination to seek out more varied and reliable sources of information.

Governments also have a role to play in ensuring that citizens, especially children, have the digital skills they need to be safe and informed. Estonia could be an example for other nations. The Baltic nation in recent years has responded to multiple disinformation campaigns with a multi-pronged approach to protecting its citizens that includes media literacy education for student of all ages

The vast applicability and expressiveness of category theory leads to the observation that most structures in mathematics are best understood from a category theoretic or higher category theoretic viewpoint. Category theory is one of, if not the most, abstract fields of mathematics. It’s even been dubbed, as one might tease a younger sibling, “abstract nonsense.”

After all, the field throws out all the specific properties of objects and instead focuses solely on their translations. This extreme generality of category theory means that it can say something about anything, but nothing too specific. In other words, part of the growth of category is probably because you can use it to talk about damn near anything

12/10/2022

One problem facing companies is that the traditional way to recruit, hire and promote staff fails to identify and select diverse people at every step in the process. Humans are predisposed to favor others who are like themselves; in a hiring process, that means decision-makers whether consciously or not – tend to hire people who look like them, went to the same schools, and have the same interests and hobbies. The same set of biases come into play when deciding on raises, promotions, and seats on boards of directors

AI can counter such biases in several ways. During the hiring process, for instance, it can scour databases to find candidates in underrepresented categories and match applicants, as well as current employees, with jobs they may never have thought to apply for. It can take bias out of the resume-screening process by stripping out details such as names that denote race or gender. And as with video interviews, it can supplement the bias-prone, face-to-face interview with a standard set of questions customized for the open position. AI can also be used to hold managers accountable by evaluating their decisions

Hiring talented data scientists is one thing; harnessing their capabilities for the benefit of the organization is another. Business leaders should clearly define the problem they want their data science teams to solve. Data scientists, especially new ones, often want to get going with preparing data and building models. And at least initially, they may not have the confidence to question a senior business executive, especially if that individual is the project sponsor. It is up to leaders to make sure the team focuses on the right problem

The desire for personalization is a consumer trend noticed across several industries. Presently, customers are more inclined towards a product that is created for them specifically and which gratifies their personal preferences rather than opting for a mass-produced item. This customization is enabled by additive manufacturing’s ability to offer low-volume production.

3D printing provides manufacturers with flexibility in responsive design. Manufacturers can afford to produce smaller batches, allowing designers and engineers to adjust product design and innovate in a cost-effective manner, instead of having to hoist large quantities of identical objects onto the public

"I realized AI is very interesting for sure. Super powerful, but a lot of people in non-technical organizations miss the context so they can understand AI, but they maybe don't know about how data flows between Apple and Apple devices, or they don't know how Facebook operates. They hear about the metaverse. And they're confused about what that is. They don't know what NFTs are. And so you're giving them a tool, but they don't necessarily understand the technological context that they can use this tool" Our guest on HumAIn, Gianluca Mauro, CEO, AI Academy

Apps are increasingly important in the way hoteliers manage the services they provide to their customers and can now control many aspects of the guest cycle and experience. Needless to say, the trend towards digital and contactless services has gained momentum. Traditionally, customer-facing services are being given an overhaul thanks to the more widespread use of technology-assisted options, such as mobile check-in, contactless payments, voice control and biometrics.

Consumers who have become accustomed to unlocking their smartphones and laptops using facial and fingerprint recognition will soon come to expect the same convenience in accessing their hotel rooms. Unfortunately, for the establishments looking to welcome them, these upgrades may be costly to install and maintain. If hotels want to stay ahead of the curve, they must dig deep and make the investment

A tech-touch customer success strategy needs to add value to customers. It must not be a simple replacement or alternative. It needs to add value to build a relationship. Automating KPIs, agreements, product updates and more can help amplify the impact. By gathering data, you can segment customers better and benefit from automation exercises. Through this, you can also personalize your efforts to customers. So the journey to being tech-touch and efficient is by concentrating customer data with customer communication that focuses on customer satisfaction

2022 is the year when human-centric computing finally comes of age when software engineers and data scientists join forces with design experience professionals to understand the human problem that needs to be solved and develop a solution that sets out to solve it. Creating human-centric solutions requires a new way of thinking that goes beyond bits, bytes, and data to include the human perspective.

Its impossible for even the most learned scientists and research teams to keep up, let alone process the wealth of information that exists and might be relevant. That's a massive human limitation but presents a perfect machine learning opportunity. Data has a white noise problem. It needs to be contextualized particularly in biology and medicine, which is so context dependent.

Furthermore, diseases have traditionally been diagnosed by its symptoms and its location in the body not by the underlying molecular mechanisms, pathways or biological processes specific to a specific patient. Identifying targets and discovering connections with pathways early on the disease progression helps intervening at the causal stage rather than the symptoms. Hence, many of the prescribed medicines don't often work on patients.

New Episode for Humain Podcast with Steven Banerjee, CEO, NExTNet Inc.

https://www.humainpodcast.com/steven-banerjee-apple

👨💻 Steven Banerjee is the CEO of NExTNet Inc.

✅ NExTNet is a Silicon Valley based technology startup pioneering a digital infrastructure to accelerate biomedical decision making by leveraging breakthroughs in software, natural language processing (NLP) and Explainable AI.

🏫 NExTNet built Sapiens to be the OS for the modern biotech and pharma. The company abstracts away all the complexities of the command-line interface, statistical modeling, or querying languages with a clean and intuitive Graphical User Interface so that scientists and decision makers can explore their data faster, discover the anomalies and trends of interest, generate hypothesis and actionable insights, and make those critical decisions for their business. NExTNet calls this the Explainable GUI (xGUI).

💻 NExTNet is building an end-to-end no-code workflow that will allow scientists and decision makers to upload their "behind the firewall" experimental data onto the platform securely, contextualize that data and understand how that is embedded in the broader knowledge space, and directly manipulate these relationships in their Enterprise Knowledge Graph, generate new hypothesis and actionable insights.

🚀 Most modern "black-box" AI systems rely on statistical confidence and probabilistic scores, often lacking explainability, with opaque logic and making predictions that are hard to trust. Whereas Sapiens surfaces transparent search results (i.e., relationships between biological objects), the underlying data and evidence for each result in a visual network format, with full provenance and lineage of the data and user-generated insights preserved. Bench scientists can explore interconnected data visually as maps that track to how humans think and determine for themselves the strength of a result.

✍n Steven is also the founder of Mekonos, a Silicon Valley based biotechnology company backed by world-class Institutional investors (pre-Series B) — pioneering proprietary cell and gene-engineering platforms to advance personalized medicine.

Businesses have become more realistic about their extended digital footprints, and it's becoming evident that physical locations are no longer adequate for customer interactions, especially when most of those customers spend more time online. The Metaverse offers an enticing solution to this need for expansion by providing an expansive digital space where businesses can sell products and hold interactive events

Every company is trying to find new ways to scale. And the number one challenge is the struggle to hire, retain, and reskill people. We're in one of the most challenging labor markets in decades. But the problem is not just caused by the labor market. This is a problem of industry reinvention: companies are not just digitizing and hiring, they’re turning into something different

Each traditional industry, as it was defined in the last 100 years, is turning into something different, and these changes are happening faster than ever. At first glance, you perceive a skills gap, so you focus on hiring or training. But what leaders often don’t realize is that this isn’t just a skills problem. The company is moving into a whole new domain

Digital tools are enabling learners to connect with each other. Mindful discussions among learners are always an integral part of learning, and the industry is working in order to bring more positive changes to connect learners so they don’t miss out. Elements of social learning are already being integrated into eLearning. Live classrooms are one such practice that has enabled learners to interact in a rich social learning environment.

The eLearning industry has also shifted its attention to introducing a wide range of online activities and exercises into an eLearning course. Apart from text modules, this includes virtual classrooms, video instructions, image-rich slide-based modules, and so on. This is to ensure learners get the best experience.

Learning to code can help open up new areas of opportunity in your career and ultimately make you a more flexible candidate in a rapidly shifting digital economy. You don’t have to be a programming whiz to reap the benefits of learning to code. Knowing just enough to be useful can still be a positive asset in most business environments. Coding even as a hobby, can give you a common reference point and better understanding of those who tackle some of the more complex programming and coding roles out there.

It is incredible to see where modern math has the magic. I remember participating in math competitions, and one of the things that was prided from the best teachers in the industry was, could you do mental math? Can you solve these complex trig problems with no calculator? Sometimes even no pencil or paper. It was really to see those proficiencies, but we're seeing now that the business perspective has changed. We're trying to build applications. We're building technologies that are all about automation and scaling into the fourth industrial revolution.

A great episode for HumAIn, which we discussed in depth with Chris Bishop, TEDx speaker and Workplace Futurist on issues ranging from why and where data science applications are being explored and expanded, future data science opportunities and the future career toolkit.
