The importance of the underlying story and the value of oral history!

The celebrated author wrote about having a breakdown. Only now do we know the full story of a moment that caused her to say she could feel the 1960s “snapping.”

I'm so sorry to read this. Wade Goodwyn was a good friend of Texas Folklife. In my role as PR contractor for the organization over many years, I was interviewed by Wade and he promoted stories on the annual Accordion Kings and Queens concert on NPR. RIP

Wade Goodwyn had one of public radio's most recognizable voices, but it was his rich writing and keen observations that made him a listener favorite over decades at NPR.

Friends, it's been a good week here at Scarborough Place! I'm announcing the redesign and launch of my website today: https://www.shereescarborough.com/
Many many thanks to Meredith Carty at Jones Street Creative: https://www.jonesstreetcreative.com/
She did an excellent job and was a joy to work with! I did love my old site, but it was time for a change.

I so enjoyed my talk at the Link Museum Wednesday night. My book was launched eight years ago in the same place! It was a successful event (even with a couple of tech glitches-/always it seems!). It was so nice to revisit the material, see some old friends, and reconnect with some folks from the original project. Many thanks to the Historical Society of Western Virginia. (You can certainly see the progression of gray in my hair. 😊) Onward!

This seems like an important project. Too bad it was upended by the pandemic. Hopefully, it can resume. I have interviewed a number of World War II veterans for the Library of Congress (and elsewhere) and their stories are poignant and meaningful.

Jeffrey Rease has captured images of more than 100 veterans, ages 93 to 104, for his Portraits of Honor project. But the pandemic has made his effort even more challenging.

I'm sharing a talk I gave two years ago at the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library in Christiansburg, Virginia, based on my oral history with Nan B. Hairston (1921-2017), a Southwest Virginia civil rights pioneer and community leader. I've shared this before (I believe) but I wanted to put it out here again because I quote extensively from our interviews and play some from the recordings. African-Americans voices need to be heard. Hers is a powerful voice. Please forgive the imperfect video and my at times clumsy PowerPoint presentation. Interestingly or ironically, the date of the talk (August 11, 2018) was the first anniversary of the violent United the Right Rally in Charlottesville. One of Mrs. Hairston's mottoes was: "If you can't do it out of love you need to stop." There were numerous local political leaders and dignitaries in attendance, as well as a video message from Senator Mark Warner, that precede the talk. If you want to jump straight to it, you can find it at 22:58. I'm grateful to June Sayers and the MFRL, which holds the copyright for the video, and to Nan B. Hairston for her wisdom, strength, and perseverance.

A celebration honoring local community leader and civil rights icon, Nan B. Hairston (1921 -2017), was held on August 11, 2018. Historian Sheree Scarborough,...
