Larva
It's Mosquito Season!!!!
I know, don't get too excited 🦟
In many parts of the U.S. the mosquitoes are starting to make themselves heard and felt. So it's time to remind you all of basic mosquito control measures you can take to protect yourself, your family (including the fur babies), and your home.
2x a week DRAIN/EMPTY water from garbage cans, house gutters, pool covers, coolers, toys, flower pots or any other containers where sprinkler or rainwater can collect. and I mean any containers (I have seen mosquito larva in bottle caps with barely a tablespoon of water!)
You need to drain and empty any water source 2x a week. The video below with little wiggly larva, that water was in a trash can lid for less than 72 hrs!!
DISCARD: Old tires, drums, bottles, cans, pots and pans, broken appliances, and other items that aren't being used and can accumulate water
REPELLENT
Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents with one of the active ingredients below. When used as directed, EPA-registered insect repellents are proven safe and effective, even for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
➡DEET
➡Picaridin (known as KBR 3023 and icaridin outside the US)
➡IR3535
➡Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE)
➡Para-menthane-diol (PMD)
➡2-undecanone
PETS:
make sure your fur baby is on a heartworm prevention medication (That's right, heartworm is a mosquito-borne disease!)
DO NOT SPRAY YOUR PET WITH DEET!!! It's toxic for them. Please consult your vet for pet-safe repellent
Check out your state and local mosquito control and health department websites for tips and spray/control requests

Number of laboratory-confirmed and probable COVID-19–associated deaths and total estimated excess deaths — New York City, March 11–May 2, 2020
Counting only laboratory confirmed or probable COVID19 associated deaths is underestimating the number of deaths attributed to the Pandemic.
A new report from the New York City Department of Health in the MMWR discusses the excess mortality in NYC during the COVID-19 outbreak from March 11 to May 2.
During March 11–May 2, 2020, a total of 32,107 deaths were reported to DOHMH
- 24,172 (95% confidence interval = 22,980–25,364) were found to be in excess of the seasonal expected baseline.
- Of the 24,172 deaths were 13,831 (57%) laboratory-confirmed COVID-19–associated deaths and 5,048 (21%) probable COVID-19–associated deaths
The 5,293 excess deaths not identified as confirmed or probable COVID-19–associated deaths might have been directly or indirectly attributable to the pandemic.
You may have heard the term Excess Mortality, it refers to the number of deaths above expected seasonal baseline levels, regardless of the reported cause of death.
So if say X deaths are expected during a period of time but X+Y deaths occur those numbers could be used as a nonspecific measure of the severity or impact of pandemics and public health emergencies. Reporting of excess deaths might provide a more accurate measure of the impact of the pandemic than confirmed case counts.
